Meet Fedibook!
The idea came from thinking about what it actually takes to get regular users onto the fediverse. Mastodon is great (i love it), but the follow-based model feels unfamiliar to some. Friends and Groups though — that's something everyone already understands.
So Fedibook is a fediverse platform built around exactly that, using ActivityPub. Think federated address book meets social network, with the kind of social graph people are already used to.
Current status:
- Friend requests across servers working
- News feed working, with visibility levels: public, friends-only, or local server only
Hoping to open up for early testing and feedback soon. Open source of course.
Jeg prædiker nok for koret her – men jeg har gjort en artikel om organisationers brug af udelukkende Big Social til at interagere med deres brugere.
Suveræn Public Service -
Fedibook groups just got a major rewrite.
Groups now work as a ActivityPub group actors — meaning members from Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other Fediverse platforms can join and participate, not just Fedibook users.
Invite a @mastodon.social friend to your group, they accept the follow request, and group posts start appearing in their home timeline. They can post back via DM. It just works.
On Fedibook, groups looks just like that face-thing.

It's been a fun weekend building a new working fediverse applikation.
The tech stack so far..
Backend: Go — fast, simple, great concurrency. No magic, just code.
Frontend: SvelteKit — feels like writing HTML that actually works. SSR out of the box.
Database: PostgreSQL — boring in the best possible way.
Queue: Asynq + Redis — async ActivityPub delivery with retry logic. Workers run separately from the API.
Federation: ActivityPub — HTTP signatures, shared inbox, fan-out delivery for groups and followers.
Infra: Docker Compose — one file per instance, easy to spin up new nodes.
Everything self-hostable. No cloud dependencies. No vendor lock-in.
Still early days — but the foundation feels solid.
And yes - A lot of help fra Claude code. I decided to go all in an use big tech to fight big tech.

A month ago, I set out to build a new federated social network from scratch.
It’s been an incredibly inspiring journey, and today, Fedibook - The **Friends first** fediverse app -- is live, with a small but growing community forming around the showcase instance at https://fedibook.net
I’ve decided to try a weekly newsletter.
Here goes:

Thanks for your curiosity and feedback.

Post 2 of 2 - Read the entire post at https://about.fedibook.net/friends-vs-mutual-follows/
I think I need to make "Friends" an active decision. Not just a mutual follow. I still wan't to be able to be "Friends" with another ActivityPub user - not only Fedebook.
Option 1 - Mark as friend / two feeds
Enable the user to make a mutual follow as friend. This will enable the user to post stuff to real Friends and then introduce a new feed page. The Home feed for friends and groups and a new for the follows feed. What would a good name be? News, The Fediverse, The world_
Option 2 - No follows only friends
Remote the follows concept all together. Users must jump to Mastodon or other to follow the rest of the world.
I'm leaning towards option 1. I still like to be able for a user to share someting from The world with friends.
What do you think - I like to be inspirred!
I have spent the last long nights getting the Fedibook group feature proper working - A lot is working now.
