I do not understand why Google is such a popular search engine... It just seems buggy to me.

misskey 2026.3.1Soft serve, uh I mean, software engineeress from Germany. 👩💻 (In case you don’t know, software is that fluffy stuff in your puter.)
My interests are fairly diverse. I love pretty much everything related to cyberspace. Whether that's server infrastructure, algorithms, compsci or hardware design. Music is another big passion of mine. I listen to practically every genre, and I used to be a drummer playing classical stuff, jazz and pop. Regarding narrative media, I particularly enjoy escapist fiction in movies, anime and books - I've been reading a lot of isekai light-novels lately.
Besides my main interests, I post about cool or interesting things I find online, random thoughts and hot-takes, but also little nuggets from my real life.
I'm always interested in meeting new people and exchanging ideas. So, in case you want to chat, feel free to message me. 😊
Though, just as a heads-up: I like being positive and up-beat. So if you mainly post about how bad the world is I will probably not follow you.
(Just for the record: I'm not a catgirl!)

Hot take: Flatpak solves a legitimate problem. Multiple in fact.
The sandbox aspect is honestly the least interesting to me.

Soo, I just found a mosquito in my room. It was unusually big, but I didn’t make the connection. So I just squished it on the wall.
The issue: Apparently I was the main course last night, so when I squished it it exploded my blood all over the wall…

I wonder if the first person has a different meaning for an AI. Like: For an LLM fundamentally everything is text. The user input, tool results, system prompt and also its own output.
So without context (as in "this is what the user said"), the word "I" could mean either the model identity or the user.

Apparently my NAS crashed. Interestingly though, the computer instance that mounts it via NFS was still online - though nothing was working.
Brought the NAS back online and restarted the important VMs and everything went back to working. I’m positively surprised how well my systems tolerated a disappearing storage server. 😅

"quick code review"… "1.5k LoC"…
I’m getting flashbacks to a rather negative discussion I recently had with an “AI first" fanatic who said (and I quote): "Do we really need code reviews?" leaving me and the other developers in the room stunned…

@Starcross@mk.absturztau.be I mean to be fair, at least in the EU herbal medicine is technically allowed to be sold as medicine even if there is no proof that they actually work, let alone how they work. You just need to proof that it has been used for a long time as medicine, even before it was sold as such. ^^

@masek@infosec.exchange Do you just put the service name in the address, or do you have another scheme for "generating" addresses?

@tinker@infosec.exchange +1 for Mailbox. You can add custom domains there. But as far as I know there I no way to easily set up mailing-lists. My solution was always to add a fowlrwarding rule for that - not exactly clean though.
You could also look into Posteo. I've not used it myself, but they also support custom domains I think.

This morning I was watching a Fern video on YouTube. Google managed to show me 5 (five) ads on a 20 minute video. So I decided to not watch YouTube for a while - as a sort of feedback, you know?
Kinda regretting it right now. I feel the need to distract myself…

I ordered a print from the USA. According to the courier the customs office raised some issues regarding the package.
… I’m sorry. They what? It’s a f*cking piece of paper. I don't see the artist wrongly declaring the contents either. What could possibly be the issue here?

@sunguramy@flipping.rocks You could look into DIYing it.
If it’s just the water level the sensors are quite affordable. I’m guessing material costs wound be well below 100 € for sensor, (Bluetooth-enabled) controller, battery, and some sort of wether-proof housing.

Random question: Which smart TV OS is the least... well... smart?
I'm looking for a decent TV around 55"-60" with as little ads and surveillance in it as possible.
Any pointers?

Hot Take: SNI in its current form is bad… The server name should not be transmitted in plain text. At least put it behind DH, so passive MITM sniffing doesn’t work anymore…

Hot take: The problem with using HTTP as a transport for everything is that any new-ish version of HTTP brings so much complexity (especially on the server side) that it’s just unreasonable to implement it when a raw TCP connection would do. And sure, you could just use a library. But do you really want to pull in an HTTP server library into your embedded application that’s larger than the actual application code, just for transport?

random thought about audio encoding
When I have a picture in JPEG, I decode it to raw, and then reencode it to JPEG using the same settings, the image quality should not decrease (by my understanding anyway). The high frequency content is already lost, so there is nothing more to be lost. However, if I modify the raw version by displacing all pixels a distance that’s not a multiple of 8, there should be a quality loss even with the same settings, because we are distributing the quantization noice to neighboring blocks.
Now here’s my question: Does the same happen with mp3? I think I remember mp3 also being a DCT-based technique. So reencoding with the same settings should work (I think… unless it’s VBR maybe?). What happens when I shift all the samples back in time?

@splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org hmm… I’m not sure about this to be honest.
First of all, the XY problem is a thing that happens - everybody sometimes just asks the wrong questions.
And secondly, even if people don’t know the answer, stuff like guesses, hints or just intuition often feel helpful for me because they sometimes point me into the right direction for my own research.
As for "someone will know the answer": Maybe. But the amount of unanswered questions I have posted to fedi kinda makes me think that my posts don’t reach the people who know the answer. So I very much would rather have guesses than nothing.
But I guess that’s a personal thing. Or I’m just weird. ^^"
