"To hold a pen is to be at war." --Voltaire

"I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous amount of fumes and everything." --Donald Trump

@neotoy@mastodon.social Hmm, yes. In the early 1980s I lived in a 2-1/2 story 17 room mansion, in West Los Angeles, built when it was the only house in the area in what is now called Mar Vista. 100% redwood, built in 1903, solid, immune to termites, immune to everything. Earthquakes caused some issues with the footings of ths house but it still stands today. My father taught me about redwood back in the 1960s. Not easy to work with. You have to develop a feel for it. It's a very strange wood. Splinters are brutal. But insects won't touch it. Nothing touches it, from my observations.

@waldoj@mastodon.social Also, I live in Dominion's region and my electric rates have been going up, up, up. What's more, wind and solar are not a thing around here, yet. Why?

@laurahelmuth@mastodon.social The damaged education system is responsible for producing people who don't understand how anything works. They turn to religion and hucksters that talk a good line and say what they want to hear. Institutions of higher education have become sports franchises. People barely read at a 6th grade level. Math knowledge is almost non-existent and even deprecated as something only weaklings and nerds know about. Meanwhile, China is graduating more engineers every year than the U.S.A. graduates total in all majors combined. Every year. It took generations to degrade from where we were in the 1960s to where we are now. It will take generations to reverse, if we even try. The long-term outcome should be obvious and it's not pretty.

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org @EugestShirley@m.ai6yr.org @dbc3@mastodon.world No knowledge of DEC CEs here but plenty of IBM. All the stories of IBM CEs are positive. Those guys knew their business and didn't fool around. I was impressed. OTOH, IBM customers paid BIG money for leases and service so the service damn well better be stellar, and it was.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social As I remember, this has been tried before, more than once. It gets no listeners. Liberals tend to be well informed and educated. They don't get a kick out of being told what they already know. Right-wingers are a different breed of cat. They subconsciously know they're in the wrong, and out on a limb, and crave "agreement" from people like Limbaugh to repeat to them every day what they hope is true. They need reinforcement for their fantasy, every day. Liberals don't need this, so no audience.

@fomm@social.tchncs.de @jurjen_heeck@mastodon.nl @briankrebs@infosec.exchange Um, ten years ago, Facebook stated that they never, ever delete anything. Deleting your account, which I did eleven years ago does nothing but de-activate the account. Nothing is deleted. Facebook said that its systems are designed in such a way that they are unable to actually delete anything, nor any mechanisms in place to enable them to determine what needed to be deleted. Deletion is not a thing at Facebook.

@chusgc@xerrem.xyz @BrianJopek@mastodon.world The left column are political topics related to governance in a democracy. The right hand column are stupid questions that have been blown into pseudo-political questions by bad actors who want to destabilize a democracy, and have nothing to do with governance.
