RE: @coredispatch@mastodon.social
Okay friends, new side quest! I've started a Python core development newsletter!
If you've ever wanted a regular summary straight to your inbox about all the cool things happening in CPython (and adjacent areas), this is it! Like and subscribe!
First edition, room to grow! 🌳
Currently hacking on an embeddable Python REPL, powered by Wasm/Pyodide.
My goal is to make it simple to get Python running on a website, just using a script tag/div:
https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/pyrepl-web/dist/pyrepl.js">
Then, optionally strap on attributes like data-theme="catppuccin-mocha" or data-packages="pydantic, requests, whatever" and everything is taken care of for you!
A WIP but https://github.com/savannahostrowski/pyrepl-web. Working example here too: https://savannah.dev/projects/
doesjitgobrrr.com now shows annotations for merged PRs to JIT-related files and other infra changes.
This should help surface what might be contributing to day-over-day performance shifts!
I’m incredibly excited to serve on this coming term’s Steering Council!
Working on CPython has been one of the most rewarding endeavours of my career. I’m so grateful to everyone who voted & honoured that so many placed their trust in me.
I’m looking forward to working alongside my fellow council members to serve the community, support contributors, and help guide Python over the next year. Congratulations to @dongheena@fosstodon.org @Yhg1s@social.coop @pumpichank@mastodon.social, and Pablo as well! 🎉
Wrote a short post about what getting elected to the Steering Council means to me. Baby Savannah could never believe it!
I love Python! Python is forever <3!
As of yesterday's doesjitgobrrr.com run, Python 3.15 with the JIT enabled made the FastAPI benchmark:
- 1% faster on RPi (blueberry)
- 2% faster on Windows (prometheus)
- 6% faster on Ubuntu 24.04 (ripley)
- 13% faster on macOS M3 Pro (jones)

Back from PyCon so naturally first stop is the theatre.
Obsession, directed by Curry Barker tonight 🍿🖤
The coolest feature in Python 3.14 can be used to build a zero-preparation remote debugger for Python applications running in Kubernetes and Docker containers??? 🐛🪄
Wrote up how I ended up with four machines in my closet running nightly JIT benchmarks.
The answer to "does JIT go brrr?" is roughly "yes, YMMV... about 2-15% faster depending on your hardware" 🤠

Hey, you! Are you using FastAPI?
Well, I have great news for you! I've been working on something very cool for the past few months and today, it's finally yours!
The *official* FastAPI extension for VS Code is now available in the marketplace! 🎉
I might be biased but if you're building a FastAPI app, you're going to want this (oh! and it also works in browser environments like vscode.dev and github.dev, and Cursor too!).

RE: @coredispatch@mastodon.social
A very busy week prepping this edition! 😅
Thank you to @hugovk@mastodon.social and @emmatyping@hachyderm.io for helping curate and edit edition 2. 🖤
RE: @coredispatch@mastodon.social
Folks, this next edition is going to be good. I'm already looking at the curated content and people have been working on very cool™️ stuff.
Subscribe if you haven't already!
This weekend's project was building a CLI to build and run any commit of CPython!
every-python makes a blobless clone of the CPython repository (~200MB), checks out the version you want, and builds it locally. Built versions are cached for reuse.
If you pass in --jit, it will detect the correct version of LLVM needed to build from LLVM_VERSION specified in Tools/jit/_llvm.py at the time of the commit and use it!
Makes bisecting JIT things so much simpler 🥲
64-bit Raspberry Pi is now supported as a Tier 3 platform 🫡🎉
What the heck is a trampoline, anyway?
Please enjoy this deep dive that commemorates going down the compiler rabbit hole (twice! in the Paris airport!) to update CPython's JIT compiler to use LLVM 20.

Spent some time making doesjitgobrrr.com pluggable this week so that folks who want to contribute results from their own hardware can do so!
I am particularly interested in consumer-grade hardware with specs that are not yet covered by the website!
Instructions for how to contribute:

Now with 100% more Python!
Spent the afternoon porting https://github.com/savannahostrowski/gruyere from Go to Python (using Typer and Rich)!
Up on PyPI as well: https://pypi.org/project/gruyere
Okay, so I released a new version (v0.0.7) of gruyere 🧀 this afternoon!
This version has:
- 🪟 Windows support
- 🖊️ Details toggling via `d` while in interactive mode or via `gruyere --details`
- ✨ Improved filtering UX
- 🚀 Live refresh so you can use it as an activity monitor for your processes
