#Zen browser added a "Live Folder" (a folder of tabs based on a RSS feed) in the latest version. And I don't know how many hundreds of items were on my #Readeck read-later list, but it's now five, which is incredible. Just bringing my read-later list right into my browser tabs has made a world of difference.

Mystery! One of my #homeassistant door sensors is... missing. It's still connected via Zigbee, but it's nowhere to be found.

Did the kid abscond with it? (he says no). Did the cat knock it loose and bat it around?

It registered its last "door open" just after dinner two days ago, when it was pouring rain.

Zigbee network shows it connected to a router that is across the house in the basement (and not any of the 3 routers on the main level)

Any tips for finding it? The locate just blinks a tiny light, and the Zigbee map only shows one connection. RSSI/LQI numbers similar to a variety of other sensors in the basement.

I've been working on custom #MCP tools to better tie my stuff together. It's connected to the Assist functionality in #HomeAssistant allowing me to do things like:

  • add items to grocery/personal/household to-do lists.
  • check or update quantities of items in my #HomeBox inventory
  • ask for weather forecasts for anywhere

I've been using Valkey (and Redis before it) for years when building scripts or small apps to store a bit of data.

Even though I'm not storing a lot of data, it has always irked me that it needs to be in memory all the time.

Last night I found kvrocks, an Apache project, which provides a redis interface, but stores data on disk in rocksdb. Even better, it has "namespaces", so I can separate each app easily by credential.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social Yeah, here's how I have it set. First is the actual relays, interlocked, then virtual buttons that show up in homeassistant, and finally physical buttons that mirror the virtual ones.

# The Relays connected to the GDO
switch:
  ## Pin19 -> Relay -> GDO IN1
  - platform: gpio
    pin: GPIO19
    id: relayr
    name: "Relay R"
    internal: true
    interlock: [relayl]
    interlock_wait_time: 255ms
    on_turn_on:
      then:
        - delay: 250ms
        - switch.turn_off: relayr

  ## Pin18 -> Relay -> GDO IN2
  - platform: gpio
    pin: GPIO18
    id: relayl
    internal: true
    name: "Relay L"
    interlock: [relayr]
    interlock_wait_time: 505ms
    on_turn_on:
      then:
        - delay: 250ms
        - switch.turn_off: relayl

# Virtual "buttons" for GDO, shown in homeassistant
button:
  - platform: template
    icon: mdi:garage
    id: garage_opener_left
    name: "Garage Door Opener Left"
    on_press:
      switch.turn_on: relayl

  - platform: template
    icon: mdi:garage
    id: garage_opener_right
    name: "Garage Door Opener Right"
    on_press:
      switch.turn_on: relayr

binary_sensor:
  # Physical GDO buttons
  ## Pin5 -> Switch Pin1 + 10k -> GND
  - platform: gpio
    pin:
      number: GPIO5
      mode: INPUT_PULLDOWN
    name: "Garage Door Left Button"
    internal: true
    on_press:
      switch.turn_on: relayl

  ## Pin17 -> Switch Pin1 + 10k -> GND
  - platform: gpio
    pin:
      number: GPIO17
      mode: INPUT_PULLDOWN
    name: "Garage Door Right Button"
    internal: true
    on_press:
      switch.turn_on: relayr

First, it's not "GPS" that you're having Chrony (or NTPd) syncing to. It's 1 Pulse-Per-Second (PPS), which is why my screenshot says PPS is my reference clock. GPS delivers "NMEA stanzas" over a serial connection. Which means we're talking over (usually slow) serial baud rates, over which you receive "the time is now X", along with many other messages and have to guess at how long ago that timestamp was generated, since it takes many milliseconds to receive. 2/x

You need a GPS that can also deliver PPS on a GPIO pin, or separate serial port. PPS uses a voltage rise (that causes a kernel interrupt, providing accuracy) once per second to get a measure of accurate time, in nanoseconds range, which is zero point <7-9 zeros> seconds (compared to milliseconds accuracy for GPS). That gets the time into GPSd. Getting the time into Chrony (or NTPd) was also quite painful (for me, at least). 3/x

Chrony and GPSd use shared memory to communicate, which requires the daemons to start in a specific order, otherwise they don't talk to eachother. GPSd is supposed to send GPS on SHM0 (shared memory slot 0) and PPS on SHM1... which didn't work for me. I got GPS fine, but no PPS data. No idea why. GPSd definitely has PPS info, but wasn't sending it. 4/x

I tried having Chrony use SHM0 for GPS, and reading the /dev/pps0 device directly for PPS... which would work fine for several hours, then PPS data would just randomly stop. Weird. Meanwhile, GPSd still has a running PPS feed. What finally worked for me was getting GPS via SHM0 from GPSd, and PPS via socket from GPSd. That has been stable for a couple days now. But that doesn't work if I "lock" PPS to GPS. Weird. 5/x

The config for sockets is also weird. You need to tell Chrony that its reference clock is /run/chrony..sock (for me, /run/chrony.pps0.sock), a file that does not exist, which Chrony creates. GPSd, when it starts, without any config, looks for that socket, and if it exists, communicates with it (connects as root, then sheds privileges). 6/7

These communication methods are all backwards black magic voodo nonsense. The receiver (Chrony) creates sockets (or shared memory) that the sender (GPSd) guesses the names of, and uses root privileges to send to / or write into its memory space. Utterly deranged. 7/7

Okta, for an authentication system, has so many rough edges and bad user experiences.

In the portal, and click the Sign Out button? Yeah, doesn't do anything.

Already logged in, but touching something that requires 2FA? Tell the user that, and give them options on what 2FA to trigger.

My org doesn't allow Windows Hello, so if I login with that, having Okta Verify pop up, with a big "Windows Hello confirmation " doesn't help me, I can't use that to 2FA.

@bird@birdbox.party I've also been looking into this. It appears to be bots, with full-blown browsers that are requesting /tags/, which loads the full page, which they likely scrape. I've put a quick block in place, so they aren't getting what they want from my instance, and am considering what else I could do... Poison the well (give them bogus data)? Feed them an Anubis page with an impossibly difficult challenge to spin their CPU for a while? Since they're a full browser, I could 302 the initial request to anywhere (maybe a large file download or Tencent's TOS page)?

@deepjoy@hachyderm.io I find that I mostly write "glue" apps nowadays. I have a script that will watch the quantity of things in Homebox (with a specific label), and when the quantity is below the minimum, it auto-adds it to the grocery list. Keeping the inventory accurate is the challenge. Works great most of the time, but it's a lot of hassle to open the website and update it every time. I've tried a bunch of things... location/item item qr codes, NFC tags. Being able to use HA's assist is the next step at removing barriers, or at least giving options.

@vavakado@mas.to At one time I thought Btrfs was garbage, because it would go readonly randomly and caused a pile of issues. Then the server started randomly crashing. Turned out that a stick of RAM went bad, and btrfs was the first sign that anything was off. No btrfs problems since replacing the bad RAM.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I put my project box near the exit of my garage, and put buttons on it. That allows me to open/close easily when leaving or at the door end of the garage. Pro tip: look up interlocking the relays so it can't press both at the same time. In my case, the remote couldn't handle that case.
