Dr. Redfern "Red" Barrett
#Nonbinary author to Proud Pink Sky – set in the world’s first #LGBTQ+ state – and The Giddy Death of the Gays & the Strange Demise of Straights. My essays, reviews, and short stories have appeared in Guernica, Strange Horizons, Passages North, PinkNews, Booth, FFO, ParSec, Orca, and Nature Futures. I hold a Ph.D. in #Literature and am an evangelist for #ambitopia.
As much as I distrust binaries, I do think most people gravitate toward one of two instincts:
1. "I suffered so why shouldn't others?"
2. "I don't want anyone else to go through the same thing I did."
I also believe it forms the basis of your politics, coping mechanisms, and how you treat others.
I love alt text not because I need it for any disability, but because half the time I don't know who the person in an image is when it's showing a scene from a movie or TV show. The alt provides important context!
Absolutely wonderful news coming from Manchester today.
The Greens are only major party pushing back against the UK's rising transphobia, and they just won by 12 points. That's a swing of 27.5%.
For the first time in years, Britain's trans+ community has reason for hope. Happy Friday, everyone. 💚
Just a quick reminder that you’re allowed to take a break from the headlines and read a book.
Your mental health matters now more than ever, and reading/listening to books will relax you, spark your imagination, and heighten your empathy.
Those are exactly the traits we need for a better world. 📚💞
Feeling a little cerulean today.
My thoughts are with my trans+ family in Britain today.
Not only is my home country leading the world in anti-trans bigotry, this hateful nonsense has come from a party that is supposed to stand up for working people.
I will not forget this.
We will not forget this.

Trying another new colour combination today… sparkling orange, peach, and gold!
Happy weekend everyone!
RAM and hard drive shortages will lead to massive levels of inflation. Every business on earth needs hardware to function; rising costs will be passed on. To every part of every supply chain.
Imagine the impact on 20th century businesses if paper became unaffordable. That's what we're about to see.
Ooh I'm on a list of non-binary people on French Wikipedia! 🌈
I wonder how they know my birthday...

I do a lot of writing in my local cemetery.
That might sound odd, but Berlin’s cemeteries are particularly beautiful.
It's astonishing that gay media figures in the UK aren't speaking up against the unprecedented attack on trans rights.
It only shows how badly we need more public trans+ voices.
Here's a map showing which countries in Europe have no legal gender recognition. Starmer's Labour Party have made the UK worse on trans rights than *Belarus*.
This isn't talked about enough in straight cis media.

Hair is cut, lipstick’s on, and I’m off to meet with my little writing feedback circle. The blazing sun is just a bonus!
Going for cyberpunk colours today with a blend of neon pinks and oranges.
Now to meet some writer friends to share some feedback! 💗🧡
If I’d known how 5G would allow people to constantly stream loud videos on trains, in queues, and across cafes I’d have been tempted to join the conspiracy theorists opposing it years ago.
Noise is the new cigarette smoke.
Delighted to see that Oregon's Depoe Bay Book Club will be reading my novel PROUD PINK SKY!
It's always strange to think of people out there discussing my stories. I hope everyone has a fantastic time!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Just wrote the very first chapter of a new novel. The start is always a dizzying mix of thrilling and terrifying, and I can never tell how much of what I'm feeling is anxiety and how much excitement for what still lies ahead.
Being a writer is fun!
Live a life that's fully incompatible with fascism.
Be a vibrant blot of colour on their monochrome horizon.
Make their ideals impossible while you exist.
Me: You should read Reddit.
Also me: No. We’ve been over this. It’s full of people being confidently wrong about things they’ve no experience of.
Me: But you might miss something!
Also me: Yes, that’s the point.
Me: Just one subreddit. Just for a sec.
Also me: *sigh*
[Opens Reddit; regrets it]
Just finished reading in the bath – my favourite activity in my favourite place – and I’m now getting ready for the random movie night at my local cinema. I love having no idea what I’m going to see!
Have a golden evening! 💛
Say you have an entire shelf of physical books you've yet to read. Do you:
A. Diligently work your way through said books, feeling a sense of pride that you're finally clearing the shelf.
Or
B. Buy half a dozen e-books to read instead.
No prizes for guessing which option I've gone with... 🔥📚
The secret 10th circle of hell is reserved for '90s adults who responded to a child's request with "I DON'T KNOW, CAN YOU?!"
The crowdfunding just launched for TRANS IN THE MACHINE – a non-fiction book about trans+ cyberpunk.
It features interviews with Jessie Gender, Stephanie Sterling... and me!
I just backed this amazing project, and you can do so too at this link:

If you’re ever feeling down about yourself, remember that there are people who dedicate their entire lives to dismantling democracy and making vulnerable people less safe.
You could do absolutely nothing every single day and still be doing more good for the world than they are.
