finally got a moment to insert openbsd onto an old ppc mac mini, with a window manager no less... a child-scaringly primitive window manager, and now i'm slapping emacs onto it. poor thing's hammering away like a maniac - one whole 1.4ghz processor 💪🏻

Cool cool. I think (personally) if i was more organised/it was less of a dance, i'd be all-in on most if not all of my boxes with guix (i find scheme as a config language less brain-wrongy than nix on NixOS - although apparently that's the one with all the cool kids these days /shrugs/)

No, it wasn’t - I still can & do Ruby (but it’s no longer my dayjob language, sadly, just “on the side/keeping my hand in” for some personal sites), and Lisp is fun too (especially full systems like Medly etc), but Smalltalk is the one that really makes me smile, NGL.

You doing that on a physical box or a VM? Always had *such* fun with bare metal, to the point where I go “ok this is fine as avm” and do that instead. 32MB swap is a bit oof though (on holiday r/n so difficult to advise further but it should be relatively easy to set up an adequate swap partition (or just use a swap file instead?))

Recently started fooling around with squeak & cuis after a ~18 year gap (ruby instead) and was immediately reminded that the immediacy and interactivity (and the ease of exploration of the system) made it _so much more_ fun than literally everything else i’ve been fooling with in the intervening time (even Lisp!). This is the computer I wish I had as a teen 40+ years ago (and given the development in the meantime, it’s much more doable now)
