@0xabad1dea I feel like I found my peers here in a nice way, tho I’ll admit it definitely feels IRCy in its “this is probably not getting used by too many people who don’t want to think about the tech”-ness In that sense it’s fine if masto is small. It’s ok if a chat room doesn’t have every single person on the planet in it! It’s ok for a group chat to not have 10k people

obviously translation is a skill and hard etc but I'm regretting my declaration that I will definitely translate this french entrance exam. Got through 3 pages (still need to reproduce one gnarly diagram...), 7 more to go.

French has too many run-on sentences!!!!

@tao https://bcantrill.dtrace.org/2026/04/12/the-peril-of-laziness-lost/ this went around the other day day too as a thought process that I think applies here too: tooling makes awkward, messy solutions possible but can totally lead us to … engineering dead ends so to speak. Human laziness searches for simpler solutions, because otherwise we just struggle to move forward. Losing laziness as a force will mean less easy-to-use foundations… maybe

https://github.com/3YOURMIND/django-migration-linter/ I was today year's old when I found out about a package that lints Django migrations for common mistakes that cause issues when trying to do zero-downtime deployments

Recently chatted about French entrance exams with buddies and decided to check out what recent exams look like for the comp sci stuff and... men would rather write this than just write `list(set(s))` smh https://www.doc-solus.fr/prepa/sci/adc/pdf/enonces.pdf/2024/MP_INFO_MINES_2_2024.enonce.pdf

@bodil guaranteeing yourself to recruit certain kinds of people and turn off others (including people plenty good at high school who just identify what a weird thing that is to ask!)

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems really wish that this could “just” be “everyone who pushes just gets their own branch namespace” or something instead of needing bespoke options… one day

@danluu what does fuzzing/random testing look like for business logic? It feels like a lot of the examples are of the “thing crashes” variety but with CRUD apps where we tend to be reading data, transforming a bit, then throwing it back into the DB, it feels like the failure states are way less obvious Have you had success in that space?

@jonny 1000% agree, and have totally witnessed this. I've found decent success in "I describe a test, it writes that test, then tries to make that pass" as a flow, because it relies on me both pointing out a useful test and on ... most of the code being fine still. But anytime I try giving these tools more leeway it leads to messes

@jonny “make tests pass” is definitely not the worst way to work on something but it’s funny how much these tools then respond with so much random null coalescing Very reminiscent of pre-TS JavaScript codebases and Python 2’s “Is it str or bytes? Just apply decode anyways” stuff

@glyph I think the closest worry I can see is more a logistical collapse due to semiautomation causing massive planning issues A real life equivalent to “ah why are my servers all falling over…. Oh disk space” but for some planning processes all optimizing on some weird axis. Not a singularity so much as just a bunch of pain from us shifting more and more into automated decision making and having less eyeballs on intermediate results. Still… humans will be in the loop in so many spots!

@fionafokus@mystical.garden @linus@donotsta.re it kills me when the original image is deployed even in “the new standard envelops an older one or is otherwise backwards compatible in practice so does not in fact increase the cardinality in a real sense” but people are so into posting that comic Probably the most damaging XKCD comic of all time? On account of most of them not causing much damage at all 😂

https://github.com/tc39/proposal-temporal/issues/1751 I am so angry at this. The working group correctly identified that if your input string to PlainDateTime has Z then it’s a UTC timestamp and probably a bug in hiding (so it blows up). But it didn’t acknowledge that _any_ offset, not just UTC, is the same problem! So it should blow up for any offset, not just UTC! Type theory mindedness would have saved us from this colossal mistake

Been chatting a lot about XMPP with some people the past couple months and it got me wondering... is there an XMPP SDF instance?

@carlton@chaos.social was there ever any discussion when you were working on template partials around having support for "inline with" with django template partials, like how {% include %} has it? Searched the forums and having trouble finding chatter around that

Is this a "we already have {% with %}" thing for you? Or some subtlety I'm missing?

Django people out in the world: do y'all actually reach for the Django built-in class based views?

Class Based Views with a bunch of extra functionality is nice of course, but I've found that the couple lines it takes for me to do simple forms and the like in a function-based view just makes it a hard sell.

But perhaps there are people out there using CBVs even for the basic stuff to have a bit more of a declarative configuration

What’s the Tokyo or New York City equivalent of the story beat where someone sees a gas station sign with gas at like 14 dollars a gallon to express that things have gotten very expensive?
