Misanthropic is run by a dangerous cult of idiots.

Yes, they are. But none of the alternatives are any better.

Sam Altman is a sociopath who will do anything for more power and is well on his way to achieve what it is he is set out to do.

Google is the Borg, and we know how dangerous it is to leave so much power in the hand of any single corp.

I am not saying "Anthropic is the lesser evil", I just don't understand why your hate is reserved only for Anthropic.

@thePB@mastodon.social not yet, but it wouldn't be too difficult to implement something like it on top of places.pub and a C2S application.

Ideas for things to do in the Fediverse for the World Cup?

@football@sopuli.xyz @football@soccer.forum @fediverse

I have most of the pieces in place to launch another football-focused service for the fediverse (jogabonito.community).

It can be used as place to host Lemmy-style groups, but it's 100% powered by own ADAPT project. Given that it fully implements the ActivityPub API, I am wondering what ideas anyone could come up with.

Embedded graph database built in #rust, with #python bindings, allows storing and querying data in RDF: https://grafeo.dev/

One more piece down in order to build my dream #activitypub browser.

Today I am seriously considering scrapping the whole extension and just taking my python code, bundling it as a application service via Tauri and be done with it.

@mariusor@metalhead.club Also tried sqlite-wasm. Similar issue to pglite: bundling wasm and getting it available in an extension (in a way that works with OPFS) requires some magical incantation of JS tooling that I am yet to master.

@kevin if you are running a single-user instance, then I'd guess the effort of migrating would be lower than the effort of getting a change like this merged to Mastodon.

@babetteknauer @universityofgroningen Tangentially related: I run https://academy.garden , a Lemmy instance for forum-style discussion and link sharing. I could definitely set up communities there to create a place to gather conversations around specific topics.

@MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk seems like *both* sets of rules are flawed? Both of them make it seem that it is a zero-sum game and wealth can not be generated, only moved around.

using #pouchdb created one database to store AP objects, expanding the JSON-LD. Added 2 indices (type and published) After ~2000 documents, it takes 30+ seconds for it to complete indexing. Add more indices and it takes even longer. Then you learn that the best practice is to create "documents" that are nothing but an encoded set of ordered attributes, so that you can "filter" by selecting start and end keys. Ok, clever hack, but then every possible query needs its own "index".

So, if you are working and your app has already a few thousand documents, every time you need to make a script that "builds" those keys. It's like having to run a migration script every time you need a new query.

Next was dexie. Less issues with indexing compared to pouchdb. But still the same problem: you can only query for keys that are in the index and screw you if you want to get a join.

Then I got to pglite. Yes, I can get actual relational database. Yes, getting it to work took me "only" half a day on a web page using indexeddb, but there is a slight problem: the performance is abysmal on indexedb. I started importing the documents that I had on pouchdb (4 weeks of daily driving the extension got me ~180k documents) which pouchdb exported in less than 20 seconds. But to import them to pglite on idb: 55ms for each document at the beginning, 120ms after 10k, 160ms on 20k

Yeah, maybe I should look into a way to import in bulk, but before trying to polish this turd I went to look on using OPFS for the filesystem... and oh boy, what a mess. For starters, OPFS can only work on a worker, and browser extensions have a complicated story with workers. Then I realized that Plasmo uses Parcel , and parcel can not figure out how to bundle wasm. (Again, could be an skill issue)

Then, after moving from Plasmo to bedframe *just so I can use vite*, I still can not get the right incantation of vite config + pglite setup. Seriously, no wonder dev teams just push Electron bloated crap.

It works on Firefox!I ~5ms insertion of a document on pglite using OPFS (10x speed up), on a very naive implementation. Should have tried before...

Look at it go! (Also, a sneak preview of UI)

(Also, it's a bit ironic that I can upload videos to the Fediverse, but Mastodon refused to accept it, so I need to post a link instead)

Dear lazyweb, there is a video from @notjustabout about "cars crashing into stores" where he contrasts North American and European policy makers reaction to accidents, but I can't find it now.

I am arguing with a couple of people who think that adoption of LLM poses no risk for the individuals "as long as they are careful and responsible". The parallels are obvious, and I think that video can make my point better than I ever will.

@dino @NGIZero Could you share a bit more info about the grant and how the process went? I have a project related to privacy that is on the back burner due to other projects that are paying the bills now. Do they require some kind of established user base for the projects or is it okay if the app is more green?
