The #DataSittersClub is back! Is your #Python environment a mess? The Data-Sitters can walk you through setting up project-specific environments. But more importantly, we've got some thoughts about making bigger changes in that environment called your life. https://datasittersclub.github.io/site/dsc21.html

We're working on an update to the DIY #webarchiving #zine and are looking for recommendations for paid, secure, non-Google #Email Any suggestions? ProtonMail doesn't seem like a good option given the recent behavior of their CEO. (https://zinebakery.com/homemade-zines/bakeshop-2-diywebarchiving)
After one day, there's now over 160 people on the Mastodon #DigitalHumanities list! There's also now a DH group anyone can join, here: @dh@a.gup.pe. Following @dh@a.gup.pe gets you updates; mentioning it adds that post as an update.

513 rows of #data. Now to cut this off, tie on different warp, and weave the whole thing over again. #DHmakes #DigitalHumanities #weaving
The new #DataSittersClub book is here! HathiTrust is like NYC: it's big, famous, and honestly a little overwhelming for tourists. In DSC 18: "The Data-Sitters HathiTrust Mistake", Cadence Cordell & I tried to write a guide to make it a little easier, with help from @gworthey@mstdn.social. If you've gotten stuck before, check this out! https://datasittersclub.github.io/site/dsc18.html

My Textile Makerspace and I made it into the promo video for Making@Stanford! It's come so far from its days as a dusty computer lab in the non-English literatures building. ✨ #DHmakes #DigitalHumanities #textiles https://youtu.be/N3LIzuRaYzg?si=ommBGqPTLi2d4gjv
Working on a #TextileMakerspace website overhaul, and I got the idea in my head to write profiles of each of our machines in the first person. And ooh, spelling out these machines' quirks in their own voices is dangerously fun. #sewing
I've ended up with an inquiry from a #DataScience student interested in examples of #harm coming to people because of #data collection (especially in a war context, but open to anything). Do folks have any favorite pointers / examples I could pass along?
Brought my #insomnia #embroidery to the all-day #Unicode meeting yesterday and managed to get mostly caught up! This month has included a new kind of insomnia (white bead), attempting to use sleep drugs (overlapping stitches) and just generally not sleeping well at all! #DHmakes #DigitalHumanities
5 hours of teaching a drop-in workshop on taking body measurements, and reading and making sewing patterns, plus bonus embroidery, spinning, and sewing basics. Tired but happy. #DHmakes #DigitalHumanities
I'll be representing Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO) and the Textile Makerspace at the library's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Fair, so it's vyshyvanka time w/ an old pair of cactus pants (since they're covered in needles). And check out this beaded S for our new sign! #DHsewing
A writeup of #SUCHO week is now up on our #DigitalHumanities blog: https://digitalhumanities.stanford.edu/sucho-week/. Special thanks to the @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org for their hospitality last week!
@storytracer Lots of groups who need infrastructure, which #DigitalHumanities groups can support. Even if software is free, someone needs to run and support it (and that should be us). We have a duty to digitally empower others. #SUCHO #DHd2023
I'm overdue on laundry so ended up accidentally cobbling together an outfit out of #AI-themed things even though it didn't fit the day at all. Delightful necklace from the Peculiarity Shop. And I taught three students in #Dataviz with #Textiles how to set up the loom and weave. #DHmakes #DigitalHumanities #weaving
Some more musings on Mastodon and academic infrastructure funding, and having to grapple with questions about what we're doing in this space to justify ongoing support, in a way we didn't have to on the birdsite: https://quinndombrowski.com/blog/2022/11/30/month-mastodon-what-are-we-doing/
I've often said that #SUCHO feels like the #DigitalHumanities version of a final game boss, where you have to draw upon everything you've ever learned to make it happen.
Somehow that keeps getting more true. I now have 24 hours to make a video, which I haven't done since college but was my major hobby for a couple years then.
Very happy to be getting back to work on the #DataSittersClub. We've got two books coming in the next month-ish: one on managing environments, and one near-transcript of the argument we got into in our first in-person meeting, which is leading to a new spin-off series...
