also, pubs and restaurants, if your menu says "sunday roast" and lists a bunch of roast dinners for £25 or £30 or so then that's fine. If roast potatoes are a separate side dish that you have to pay extra for on top of that £30, then you're a bunch of mendacious thieves and I'm not coming to your place. Be told.

of course, once you work out how to navigate the maze (which cannot solve your problem!) and speak to an actual HMRC person, they are decent and courteous and the issue gets solved in a couple of minutes. Nice one Dominic, thank you.

you thought it was difficult talking someone through doing things on a computer when you're on the phone and can't see what they're doing? the turbo level is talking someone through setting up an in-car entertainment system the same way, especially when you can't actually talk on the phone and do things at the same time because then the car's bluetooth takes over the call and only displays the phone call and not the entertainment system

Nice.

Péter Magyar isn't great, but he's not Orbán. And this is another pushback against the fash, globally, and that's a good thing in itself. I hope Magyar does the right thing by Hungarians from now. And that this is one more harbinger in a whole sequence of ongoing harbingers.

awh. I just looked up Juju's Cafe in Brum. I used to live very close to it and had quite a few very excellent breakfasts in there: it was the sort of place that did a slightly frou-frou fry-up (wild boar sausage rather than a greasy spoon; I like both) but I was up that way a few weeks ago and it was a building site. I thought I'd see when it might re-open and... https://www.jujuscafe.co.uk says that Jules died! I didn't know that. That sucks. Sorry to hear that, Jules's family. I liked your mum!

This is probably not gonna go this bloke’s way, legal-wise. But I admire him, especially since my guess is that he will deploy the “plums” defence, i.e., when he’s told using a duress password to wipe your phone is unlawful, he’ll say: suck my plums

I’d love to see the Safari team say, we could make our platform the absolute best at web apps. We could lead on that. And people would trust us more than Google. There’s an open goal right there for us; all we would need to do is be allowed to take the shot.

switched my desktop back to light mode a couple of days ago because of sun position, and... it's actually nice and I'm keeping it. Not sure why I stuck in dark mode for so long. Just 'cos it was trendy? have I actually changed my opinion on which I like?

Do I know anyone who works on the Royal Mail web team?
If so, why is the parcel tracker so terrible? It doesn’t seem even possible for someone to create a link which shows you tracking for a tracking number. It uses #/hash/navigation like it’s 2011. You can’t refresh results to update them.
Maybe there are good reasons for this. Maybe it’s just not been touched for 15 years. I’m happy to listen. But please make it better.

Apparently now three people in my #DnD party have horses and they can all talk to those horses. So now I get to embody three horse NPCs. They never told me about this at DM college.

OK, the latest HMRC government wheeze for people who work for themselves from home is that I gotta set up a "rental agreement" between Actual Me and Company Me for use of the house. (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-removal-of-the-tax-relief-for-additional-homeworking-expenses/removal-of-tax-relief-on-non-reimbursed-homeworking-expenses has all the gory details.) The accountant tells me that such agreements are available online -- I can look, obviously, but has anyone already done this and got a recommendation for such an agreement template?

places who have so far failed the "charging extra for potatoes in a roast dinner" check, also known as the "if I want Ryanair I know where to find them" test: 1000 Trades, Isaacs in the Grand Hotel. [edit: no they haven't, it's just in the fine print that I didn't see. Correction gratefully accepted; I'm sure they're ok! you do in fact get roast potatoes included]

There are people who think that #DnD DMs who want to inflict their lore on players should stop doing that, and they have a good point and I partially agree. I'm not talking to those people, here.
So, my sisters and brothers of #DnD DMs who like to lore dump. I see you. And I ask: why is the legend lore spell so expensive? It is a gift to us as DMs! It's the players literally asking for a lore dump, which is what we want to do anyway! Why should it require expensive components? Cast it every day!

I read this yesterday, but https://britishprogress.org/reports/ai-and-the-uk-labour-market-the-evidence-so-far is encouraging. People are using LLMs, but they’re not being fired in favour of them. Obviously the way such things are created is largely with theft, which is why I’m part of the big class action about that. But I would like them to become one more tool in the toolbox for real people, to be used when useful, and made without stealing, and without ceding power to Valley arseholes, and maybe that’s happening.

@evacide@hachyderm.io I was asked a while back, how often do you need to wash that shirt, you wear it all the time? and I said, firstly I've got three of them, identical, and secondly the reason I have three is that it's a shirt that magically doesn't need ironing and so I love it

woo, I have a ticket to see Game of Thrones: The Mad King at the RSC! Hooray! Rather looking forward to this; I've never been to the RSC. Many thanks to my secret web of contacts for helping. And I presumably get to find out what actually happened at the Whents' tourney at Harrenhal, which as far as I can tell was the bloody omphalos for literally everything that has happened in Westeros for the last twenty years

@knotnicky@ravenation.club I suspect the venn diagram for "people who wear glasses from meta" and "people who use words like 'beta cuck' as an insult" has a pretty big crossover (I suspect the crossover would be labelled "people who film women secretly without their consent") but I don't think the connection would be made: when I read "beta glasses" I read that as "they're not quite tested yet", not "they're worn by betas", if that's the terminology they'd use
