A quick heads up to the #rstats and #archaeology types out there. If you are teaching or learning R for archaeology, avoid this book. I just bought it, opened it up and it is 100% AI generated (and laid out by the looks of it) slop. I paid 35 Euro for the bloody thing too! (refunded now of course)

Did you know that if you calculate thiessen polygons for every stone circle on the island of Britain that you get a very pretty picture which tells you absolutely nothing relevant at all? Pretty though.

RE: @VanessaK@mastodon.scot

I am so glad that I had this fella's books as a young lad. He made me laugh, think, and not turn out an absolute dipshit.

The cyberpunk future didn't turn out quite the way that I thought it would.

@electricarchaeo@scholar.social that's approaching what I imagine higher learning would look like in a post revolutionary anarchist future.

@ASprinkleofSage@mastodon.social a bit of both but I would imagine that their destruction over the millennia to make room for farming would be a large part. The lack of good stone on the chalk downs would also be a factor. It could be interesting to add in timber circles to the data and see what happens in the south east.

@redthewizard@wandering.shop it does that, but I get the feeling that this density is more to do with clava style burial cairns which are sometimes surrounded by a circle of small megaliths but aren't the classical stone circle that we general associate with the term.

@CAA_int cool! I wish that I had seen that before. I'm going to see if I can find a way to make it this year anyway. The program looks really interesting.

@CAA_int have the 2019 proceedings from Krakow been published yet? If so, where? I can't find them for the life of me.

@CAA_int that would be great because my student budget wouldn't stretch to the ticket plus accommodation in Vienna. So there's no way it will get me to Santiago. XD

[problem solved] Has anyone got a copy of the CAA Proceedings 2012? My university doesn't have a Taylor & Francis ebook sub and the more, ehem, nefarious routes to finding such things has failed me.

Specifically I want to have a look at the chapter "The Long and Winding Road" by Verhagen et al.

@redthewizard@wandering.shop could be. I did a semi-deep dive into that area and found a lot that weren't classical circles. There are a lot of recumbent circles in that area though. It's an interesting cluster regardless.
