@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I hear a lot of talk about what the marginal environmental impact of a single genAI response is, whether you should include the amortised impact of model training and how big a difference that makes, but it seems to miss the point: every single query is a vote for "yes, please build more of this in the future" and you can't amortise that away

Also, I really really want to emphasise that no-one should be criticising libraries for still using DDC. Reclassifying an entire collection to a different standard is a huge amount of work and no public or academic library right now can afford to do that and also keep the lights on. There is some interesting work going on to address the worst issues too.

@mtrnord I figured that 1. my laptop still works fine and 2. I'm sick and can't really focus on anything else anyway, so and this doesn't really matter if it takes me all day and then I end up rolling back (I can still dual boot back to my standard setup)

Products and platforms optimised to the nth degree for pure short term profit at the expense of rights, privacy, basic functionality and anything else that can be tweaked to show a slight increase over last quarter's numbers.
Not that the UK or EU are immune, of course. We're just a bit behind the US on neoliberalism and pushing hard.
