I am a senior software and HPC research engineer, with a PhD in computer science, located in Belgium. I am very interested in programming languages (C, C++, Common Lisp, Go, Java, Julia, Python, Rust, Scheme, and others). I am an expert in parallel programming, metaprogramming, bioinformatics, and sparse computing. There is more information about me at http://p-cos.net

“I am trying to show the problem is not a lack of AI regulation. We have AI regulation. The problem is there’s an elite consensus that the rule of law simply does not apply to the powerful.” https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/ai-is-an-elite-crime-spree

AI Is an Elite Crime Spree

Documents show a Microsoft exec called AI the "largest theft of labor in human history.” New AI regulations are besides the point, the problem is we don’t apply existing laws to the powerful.

@vnikolov@ieji.de @kentpitman@climatejustice.social @screwlisp@gamerplus.org @ramin_hal9001@fe.disroot.org @SDF@mastodon.sdf.org Yes, just-in-time compilation (at runtime) is the right idea. The difference is that with JIT, you have to hope that you express your code in such a way that the JIT recognizes it and happens to be able to translate it to optimal, or at least good code. With MSP, you can construct your library in such a way that you can guarantee that it always generates optimal code, which is what Oleg Kiselyov has shown in his papers. In a sense, it's a programmable JIT. It's also very closely related to partial evaluation, but again not automatic, but programmable. Yes, CL's 'compile is the feature that makes all of this possible, and there are equivalent ways to turn dynamically constructed symbolic code into executable code in other MSP languages, like MetaOCaml, Scala, etc.

I have now seen this a few times in mailing lists: There is some discussion with an explicit or implicit question, somebody asks some random LLM and then posts its answer into the discussion, without double-checking it. Then somebody else double-checks it, shows that it's wrong, or at least in need of some correction. All of this is a waste of bandwidth, and frankly speaking just impolite. No matter what your stance on LLMs is, anybody can ask an LLMs themselves, there is no added value whatsoever in posting an unfiltered LLM answer to a public discussion. There should be an etiquette on banning this kind of behavior. I assume that people who do this act in good faith and believe that they are helpful, so it's ok to tell them in a gentle way, but this behavior should stop IMHO.

@nemin@ohai.social Oh, yes, then hash tables are definitely much better than alists. 😀 If there are a lot more lookups than updates, you might also want to try a sorted array (but you probably know that already 😉).
