mastodon 4.5.19+glitch.cathodeHi, I'm Zoé! I love making coffee and I sometimes dream of being the personal barista for all the people around me. I also make weird noises on a modular #synthesizer, clacky noises on a mechanical keyboard, and I especially enjoy making computers do cursed things. It has been documented that I once put a SN74HC04 instead of a TL074 because part of my brain believed they had to be the same and... it didn't go well. Then I did it again.

Thank you internet for making me chuckle at the "Charles Mingus just released an album" email
@quephird@tech.lgbt Buuuut it's in C!!! We just had that discussion and at some point one of us said "maybe it would actually be better in Fortran"
I'm not going to be all nostalgic about the old Internet, but I particularly miss how easily we could end up on a simple page listing a bunch of curves
Today we'd just say it's autistic-coded but I love it

@eljojo@ruby.social Having "direct digital mammography" commercially available only happened about 20 years ago, then we needed affordable GPUs, which happened almost a whole decade later. For a while we've been seeing more systems doing tomography (multiple exposures at different angles and 3D image reconstruction) and I'm really curious to see how automatic detection will be able to use this data. It's still new enough that human clinicians haven't had the time to accumulate a lot of experience yet. I'm no longer in that field so I don't even know if anyone is actually working on that.

@eljojo@ruby.social Not so long ago, the proportion of false positives and recalls were significantly higher with automatic detection than by an experienced clinician, but this study seems to indicate that we've reached a point where it's roughly as good. People have been doing research and looking for this level of performance for a couple decades by now.

@fluffy Last time we had similar work done on our driveway, it was pretty clear that the contractor was picking those little jobs between larger commercial projects. They probably used leftover material that would go to waste and exploiting the labor they had around to do extra work.
It was really sketchy and they even didn't do all the repairs they planned to do (and hopefully did not charge us for that).
@aesthr@wandering.shop A bit before that, they named a VP who was very fond of using military terms and analogies for pretty much every part of the management. My team resisted but the direction was already decided.
Maybe you remember the document that was explicitly telling us to leave if the company made us uncomfortable. None of that was an accident.
I also quit.
