Finally watched Project Hail Mary. Actually didn't know what to expect; kept myself spoiler free. The verdict: Entirely predictable, but absolutely lovely. The "science" hurts, but the feels are good.

It's time for #Wagnerfestspiele again in Germany, where the nobility meets to look down on us peasants. Like literally.

@StefanMuenz@social.vivaldi.net Wohnkosten. Srsly. @dielinke@mastodon.social

I heard a lot of criticism about the term "centrist politics". I can't see the problem with it. The natural state of every somewhat decent person seems to be being hated by the right for being too left, and at the same time being hated by the left for being not left enough. Having personal opinions that don't align perfectly with whatever dogma is en vogue at the moment seems to be treated like a sin. I hate purity debates. You call me a sinner? Well then I am a sinner, fuck you very much! 😘

@timpritlove Opus already impressed Knuth so much by solving a math problem he was working on for weeks that he immediately wrote a paper about it, so who knows. The paper: https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/papers/claude-cycles.pdf

While the Fediverse hacker elite is busy convincing each other that LLMs are completely useless and somehow at the same time will also destroy all our jobs, Donald E. Knuth (yes, THE Donald E. Knuth) had fun with Claude Opus 4.6, and wrote a paper about how it helped him to solve a complex problem he worked on for weeks: https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/papers/claude-cycles.pdf

Maybe we all should stop bitching around for a a moment and acknowledge that computers are friggin' cool. The Knuth did it too.

@Enzo90910@iosdev.space @softmaus@mastodon.social @gernot@mas.to Nah, not really. Tried the biggest ones I could cram into 32 GB VRAM and they turned out to be completely unusable for agent tasks. Like ridiculously bad in comparison. A really huge model on a machine with tons of RAM may work, but is far more expensive than to just get a couple of subscriptions. Self-hosting IMO won't make any sense for quite a while.

I'm still having way too much fun with this. That whole AI thing feels like being explicitly made for ADHD brains like mine. It automates tedious parts and provides instant gratification. It almost feels like a weird kind of video game: If you know the mechanics well enough (however obscure they may be), you can speedrun tasks. xD

I can't believe that. Started #HaloCampaignEvolved, and the intro video stutters. For some reason the game wants to draw 33 fps, but the video obviously has only 30, so you get doubled frames. It looks terrible. Unreal Engine traditionally is bad at rendering FMV for some reason, but this is exceptionally awful. And that's not just some game, it's a Halo ffs! What the fuck is going on at Microsoft?

And yes, I realize that I behave like an audiophile, but with graphics cards and screens. 😅 Alan Parsons once said: "Audiophiles don’t use their equipment to listen to music. Audiophiles use your music to listen to their equipment." I genuinely bought a couple of games in recent years not because I was interested in their gameplay, but because they support path tracing or other advanced features. I didn't use my equipment to play games, I played games to enjoy my equipment. 😂

Successfully survived the launch of Conan Exiles Enhanced. \o/
It was cool to hang around in a studio war room, like a real game developer. xD
Already found two bugs in the new UE5 server, but well, that's expected.

Well done Funcom! The game may not be my personal cup of tea, but that's the type of post-launch support I like. Basically a remaster, for free, with the legacy / UE4 version continuing to be available on private servers.

I also put A LOT of test patterns in, including somewhat rare ones like for wide gamut colors. Finally a software that properly lets me evaluate my panel's actual capabilities, and the results are quite interesting. And yes, all the calculations seem to be correct; I've checked it with Lilium's HDR Analysis.

Here with a demo texture simulating strong non-uniformity on the screen's right side. I love how the 1500 nits patch in the upper right corner causes bloom on the photo, because it's so much brighter that the rest. :D

@yiningkarlli "code is cheap" also means that refactoring is cheap. Removing obsolete functionality is cheap. Finally replacing that thing nobody wanted to touch in 10 years is cheap. I'm currently working on migrating all our various gameserver files and mod updaters that grew over time into one centralized system that previously nobody wanted to maintain, let alone extend. Mystery shell scripts with no observability, running as system crons on random hosts: Gone. \o/

A significant amount of social media seems to be people reposting obvious troll posts while pretending they are real.

I really wonder how many people for example in flat earths groups are actually flat earthers, and how many are just there pretending to in order to make fun of flat earthers. I bet there are whole flat earth groups without a single genuine flat earther in them. It's a form of interactive theater.

Status of my C++ adventure: App fundamentally works. It runs, simulates measurements, and creates an RGBA32F texture containing LUT information that's automatically loaded into a custom ReShade shader for preview (using optional dithering to avoid banding). It supports various output buffer formats up to RGBA16F for proper HDR support, and takes Windows' peak brightness and SDR white point settings into account.

Technically all energy we use comes from nuclear fusion, just with a couple of extra steps. Even Uranium is just a battery storing energy from a supernova billions of years ago.

RIP #idSoftware. 40 years of gaming history murdered by #Microsoft. idTech 6 will probably be the last version of this great engine, because all the engineers are gone. The studio is dead. This hurts almost more than the destruction of Arkane Studios.

Playing Directive 2080, which oddly enough is the first UE5 game I got hands on with path traced Lumen (didn't know that even existed). Visuals are gorgeous. The game manages very well to deliver this polished pre-rendered cutscene look, even though animations are a bit lackluster and very AA. Performance is ... fine, I guess? More or less exactly what one would expect from path tracing. Image quality and stability is excellent thanks to Ray Reconstruction.

Tried to use Sonnet for a while to get more out of the Claude subscription, and it was relatively awful compared to Opus. Huge inner monologues even for the simplest tasks. Everything takes forever, and the results are okayish at best. Pretty useless tbh, and definitely not worth the money spared.

I wish I had never learned how the news cycle works, the attention economy, human biases, and so on. Knowing the mechanisms makes watching it going on even more painful. On the other hand people with less awareness of those mechanisms seem to perceive much more things as a threat, so I guess there's a downside in ignorance too. :-/

BTW, this is the problem I try to solve: This otherwise very nice OLED screen fucks up neutral greys. Normal LUTs apply to the whole screen at once, which would only allow me to make it even more pink in the center, or even more green at the sides. I want to color correct based on zones on the screen, and this seems to be impossible without spending > $10k on professional grade equipment. 😩

Tomorrow #FiveM Enhanced for GTA V Enhanced will be released, and we got zero information about the new server so far, with the exception that the main binary will be renamed. I hope that when we finally get the server files tomorrow, everything will just magically work. Not exactly how I imagined working with Rockstar Games, but well, here we are.
