@TheBreadmonkey how can we get sure that this is what Google showed/shows when doing that search and not something made up by a random person? I couldn't replicate it.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org it's all about offer and demand: the more vegans, the fewer the demand. As we discussed, without the vegan movement, more non-vegan products would be bought, and therefore the bigger would be this kind of industries. So it definitely shrinks the growth, which is the real statement here. I'm fine with you thinking is dubious, although I don't know why. Growing soy crops to feed cows and taking away the dairy from them is way more insustituible than just drinking soy milk.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org I'm not saying there's less demand than before, I'm saying there's less demand that what it would be if vegans were non-vegans because by definition we would be contributing to the demand of non-vegan products.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org it doesn't make the current system sustainable, as scientists keep saying (including OWID and the IPCC). We could use these soy meal or cakes as fertilizer or biofuel. Instead of as fuel for the exploitation of animals on deforested land, which produce greenhouse gases of their own as well. We can make a future that encompasses animal rights, preserving the environment, and overall food efficiency.

From what you're saying, I'm guessing you refer to "One-fifth of the world’s soy is used for direct (i.e. not from meat and dairy) human consumption. Most of this is first processed into soybean oil." But that's only a 13,2% of the global soy production. There is no possible way that only the leftover from human food (20%) is used for animal feed (76%).

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org I'm guessing this is what you're referring when you say "what i said was correct": almost no soy goes to cattle at all. What OWID says: "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production." [...] "This is now 350 million tonnes."

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org oh, you may want to check the Amazon forest: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jul/02/revealed-amazon-deforestation-driven-global-greed-meat-brazil But even if, this is just an example of how insustituible it is: it requires way more resources (see Our World In Data or https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-023-00768-z) we can use this land for better agriculture and using less land and water.

Therefore the people who only buys motorcycles don't have an impact on the cars industry. Well... if they wouldn't have the believe or they had the chance to buy cars, they would. All by definition.
