@moshtodon that guardian article is sensationalizing the actual study, which does not make such a strong claim. for good reason: being vegan doesn't cause the animal agriculture industries to shrink. @IamHappyToast edit: it also, like the other "information" you presented, relies on the poore-nemecek paper, which I find dubious

@moshtodon@mastodon.social if you see the chart, almost 20% of all soy ends up as oil, but a soybean is only about 20% oil. that means almost all soybeans are pressed for oil. (85% or so). the waste from pressing beans for oil is called "soy meal" or "soy cake" and you can se that it's almost all of what is fed to livestock.

@moshtodon@mastodon.social another 4% is oil at the bottom bringing the amount of oil to 17.2%. in order for 17.2% of the worlds soybean crop to become oil, 85% of the worlds soybeans need to be put through an oil press. the byproduct of that process is most of what is fed to animals. you can see it is labeled "soy cake" in that chart.
