@arfy @ChristineMalec Also, and ironically, the likely outcome from that sort of bullshit is for a blind user to submit the image to an image recognition model.

@ghost_bird@weirder.earth Hi there, just saying hi, been a while.

@MutedTrampet@dragonscave.space Wow, that one's... extremely weird.

@dante@masto.posting.haus I just realised the resource I used to use for this is gone. It was called China Labour Bulletin, it was HK-based, and while it obviously had a bias, it was at least a good source of information of what went on in terms of labour struggles. Unfortunately it closed down in 2025. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Labour_Bulletin

@Remittancegirl slightly tangential, but it always was hard for me to understand why the WTC conspiracy stuff had so much purchase with some people, when the stuff Bush had done in the open (illegal war, torture programme) should have been enough to condemn him.

@Remittancegirl Maybe it's a desire for coherence? That even if control is held by a malevolent entity, there's still some sort of plan to it all? I admit I can be like that sometimes; when the ruling class does something that seems stupid I assume there's a good reason for it (from their viewpoint).

@quetzatl Totalmente de acuerdo.

@lobonegro@masto.es El té moruno que tienen está bastante bien, si mal no recuerdo es una mezcla de té verde gunpowder con la nana, la menta de allí. Pero sí, yo suelo tirar más al oolong chino.

@pixelate@tweesecake.social A stable screen reader and accessibility that's reliable and comparable to what one gets in proprietary systems.

@quinn @floe Great points on this thread, but I think there sort of was such a moment. In the 70s you get a lof of thinktanks worried about the "democratic surge" and "democratic distemper". For example: Al Smith once remarked that "the only cure for the evils of democracy is more democracy." Our analysis suggests that applying that cure at the present time could well be adding fuel to the flames. Instead, some of the problems of governance in the United States today stem from an excess of democracy— an "excess of democracy" in much the same sense in which David Donald used the term to refer to the consequences of the Jacksonian revolution which helped to precipitate the Civil War. Needed, instead, is a greater degree of moderation in democracy. In practice, this moderation has two major areas of application. First, democracy is only one way of constituting authority, and it is not necessarily a universally applicable one. In many situations the claims of expertise, seniority, experience, and special talents may override the claims of democracy as a way of constituting authority. During the surge of the 1960s, however, the democratic principle was extended to many institutions where it can, in the long run, only frustrate the purposes of those institutions. A university where teaching appointments are subject to approval by students may be a more democratic university but it is not likely to be a better university. In similar fashion, armies in which the commands of officers have been subject to veto by the collective wisdom of their subordinates have almost invariably come to disaster on the battlefield. The arenas where democratic procedures are appropriate are, in short, limited. Second, the effective operation of a democratic political system usually requires some measure of apathy and noninvolvement on the part of some individuals and groups. In the past, every democratic society has had a marginal population, of greater or lesser size, which has not actively participated in politics. In itself, this marginality on the part of some groups is inherently undemocratic, but it has also been one of the factors which has enabled democracy to function effectively. Marginal social groups, as in the case of the blacks, are now becoming full participants in the political system. Yet the danger of overloading the political system with demands which extend its functions and undermine its authority still remains. Less marginality on the part of some groups thus needs to be replaced by more self-restraint on the part of all groups. https://ia801308.us.archive.org/23/items/TheCrisisOfDemocracy-TrilateralCommission-1975/crisis_of_democracy_text.pdf

@riley Yes, I heard about it; the most elegant possible proof for a given theorem, roughly? Rather I was thinking of the notion you stated that proofs aren't information, and I see why you said it. But it doesn't seem intuitive when we compare it to other ways we use the notion. For example let's say we have a composite number pq. Generally speaking, we would say that getting p and q is additional information. But the proof that some p in particular and some q in particular result in pq would contain no information. It's rather odd to think of.

@riley That's a very useful angle on it. Where I think this gets interesting is that there's information which is, so to speak, self-certifying. Consider a proof, written in a form that's subject to a deterministic mechanised check. In many ways, it doesn't matter where you got it from: a Ouija board, a demon whispering, hard work, or an LLM. If the proof correctly typechecks, the theorem is true. Now if we consider programs are proofs...

@carloangiuli This sounds... hopeful. I'm blind and live in a constant rage at not having access to published maths. This might change the situation, hoepfully.

@arfy @ChristineMalec Hypothetically, it's useful to have images paired with descriptions for training image recognition and such. Whether anyone is harvesting those off from the fedi is more than I can say.

@queue@todon.eu @FediPact@cyberpunk.lol @vantablack@cyberpunk.lol Wow, am I surprised. And it took so long, too.

@chandlerc First off, I think you're essentially right that the standard should be different. Not only because the consequences are different, but because the capacity to investigate and adjudicate a claim is diffrent too (the state has special organs for this). That said, I'd push back on two aspects. First, the notion that losing employment is trivial or unimportant. There's good research on how harmful this is, and in general, many jurisdictions have tenure of employment as a right, requiring proper grounds for dismissal. I think any dilution of this stance is dangerous, because if you can dismiss someone without sufficient cause in one instance, you can do so for less justifiable reasons. Second, I think it's important to consider that this happens in the context of communities, where people can do irrational and adversarial things. Norms can be instrumentalised by bad actors if there aren't sufficient safeguards. (I could provide examples, not in free software, but regarding similar contexts.)

@timnitGebru@dair-community.social That's an interesting thread. That said, that part surprised me, that ML isn't considered AI by some people. It's been ages since I was involved in the field at all, but I got taught ML techniques and tools in AI courses: Weka, WordNet, co-occurrence n-gram stuff. Same for voice synthesis and recognition, OCR, computer vision, predictive text, IR for search engines... They always seemed like in the AI research programme to me. I'm surprised that other people seem to have a much narrower sense of the field.

@juergen_hubert @rolle Yeah, spam blog comments still happen, but as far as I know they don't work for search engine ranking.

@lobonegro@masto.es Yo lo suelo comprar aquí, porque tengo tienda física donde vivo. https://mistelanea.com/45-comprar-te-puro

@meganL Yeah, that's a posh toy, really. A yacht on rails.

@meganL@mas.to I didn't manage either. Though if you can convince people to use thunderbird, it's never been easier. It has built-in support for both OpenPGP and S/MIME, in a pretty user-friendly way.

@xogium@tech.lgbt @quetzatl@mastodon.social @pixelate@tweesecake.social What in particular, and what's your preferred option then?

@hazelweakly I see, so things that don't cross the threshold of harm as individual interactions but which aggregate. Thanks for the clarification.

@jscholes@dragonscave.space I reported that Thunderbird issue a few days ago, I was a bit concerned it was just me. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2019407

@technomancy@icosahedron.website That’s what I’m doing myself, though it’s worth pointing out it’s still very early software and some basic things (hashtags, videos, audios) are not working yet.

@juergen_hubert I think the nofollow attribute is used to avoid that from happening.

@joriki@infosec.exchange We passed a similar law in Spain last year. Results seem to be, tentatively, promising. Our law has a hierarchy of uses which privileges human use rather than compost or energy: https://sustainabilityonline.net/news/over-three-fifths-of-spanish-retailers-have-a-food-waste-strategy-in-place/

@hazelweakly Could you give some examples of what you mean by moderation of collective-level behaviour? It's hard for me to understand the sort of thing you mean.

@juergen_hubert @rolle Search companies generally obey it since it's in their best interest, in fact I think they proposed it in the first place. Otherwise you get a lot of vectors for bullshit SEO things like blog comments and such.

@jp Sospecho que será más bien su cañón de futuro, como en la canción del elegido.

@jgbarah I'm glad public administrations are paying closer attention to free software. I'm also concerned, as a public employee and a blind user, that the general state of accessibility in free sotware is suboptimal to say the least. That said, these two facts together suggest if public administrations bother investing in free software accessibility, this situation could improve a lot. I hope that will happen; I fear it will not.

@xogium@tech.lgbt @quetzatl@mastodon.social @pixelate@tweesecake.social Thanks, I was not aware that was going on; and no, it's definitely not great news. I do think absent some serious budget probably from some public institution, a11y under gnu/linux is going to stay screwed.

@jp Yo soy de sala de espera total, pero... por miedo a no tener liquidez en momentos en los que los precios y los tipos de interés puedan subir, 2) por expectación de subidas fuertes de tipos que hagan menos rentable el metal?
