RE: @andre_meister@chaos.social

Despite the parliament having voted down extending the interim regulation, the EU Parliament's president Roberta Metsola wants a second reading (=another vote) on the interim regulation.

Meanwhile, companies illegally continue scanning and forward the infos to NCMEC, which forwards tips to Germany... of which half (!) are not legally relevant.

Chatcontrol 1.0 is back on the agenda! https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document//OJQ-10-2026-03-26_EN.html#TF3

On 2026-03-26 (Thursday), European Parliament will vote again on new amendments (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/plenary/en/report-details.html?reference=A10-0040-2026 ) to the proposal, potentially enabling new Trilogue negotiations.

Thanks to netzpolitik.org for the info: https://netzpolitik.org/2026/verlaengerung-der-ausnahmeregelung-rat-liess-chatkontrolle-verhandlungen-sehenden-auges-scheitern/

The articles includes two documents showing the reaction of the member states before the vote of the European Parliament and after.

chatcontrol 1.0/2.0
RE: https://chaos.social/@andre_meister/116850964100466381 netzpolitik.org leaks nine (!) internal documents related to chatcontrol: https://netzpolitik.org/2026/interne-dokumente-eu-staaten-wollen-chatkontrolle-zombie-zurueckbringen/ Noteworthy: The German delegation is in favor of chatcontrol, as instructed by the German federal ministry of the interior, to prevent the regulatory gap that exists. The European Parliament is set to vote on chatcontrol 1.0 on Tuesday (2026-07-07), while the political trilogue negotiations for chatcontrol will only resume on September 29th #chatcontrol #Chatkontrolle #privacy

RE: @andre_meister@chaos.social

netzpolitik.org once again leaks documents, this time from the trilogue negotiations. EU member states have submitted statements on what should be gathered by mass data retention. Three countries explicitly named Signal as a relevant target: https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/WK-13500-2025-INIT/x/pdf

The passed amendment 5 is *very* important. It notes that detection needs to be targeted to users which are suspected or linked to abuse. Source: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/A-10-2026-0040-AM-004-006_EN.pdf#page=2 This is a *huge* win #chatcontrol #Chatkontrolle #privacy

German news service tagesschau published an interview of Gary Haugen, CEO of the International Justice Mission (which heavily pushed for chatcontrol): https://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/amerika/online-missbrauch-kinder-100.html

The interview is completely uncritical! Haugen proposes banning cameras from being able to record child abuse, claims that it's technically feasible, only politically unwanted

He also regrets the lack of progress on chatcontrol

@titaniumbiscuit @echo_pbreyer @chatcontrol Looking into the author's previous texts, this is even worse: The author clearly knows that this technology is unreliable & not fit for use. Just 2 months ago she wrote an article complaining that meta submits inaccurate/bad reports to NCMEC: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/feb/25/meta-ai-junk-child-abuse-tips-doj Yet, this new article cites NCMEC statistics without at all mentioning that meta is responsible for most reports and that these are inaccurate.

If you're confused what exactly was agreed on (that was a lot of amendments to vote on), you can check each of them here by going to https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/A-10-2026-0040_EN.html clicking on Amendments & opening the individual documents. As predicted, the compromise supported by multiple parties (EPP, S&D, Renew) got passed (amendments 1-3) while the other individual were rejected... with the exception of amendment 5 which also passed. E: Fixed link as Parliament/Committee amendments differ

@mindaugas @chatcontrol Better informed than the folks at netzpolitik.org which have been following this for years and leaking cable after cable about this, yet are not saying anything about this? I have my doubts, which is why I'm asking for a source.

@voidanix Thank you! As far as I can see, they don't have details on a vote/agreement on the meeting from the 12th. The only thing about that which could be interpreted as this references the COREPER II session from November 5th, but ignores that some states (e.g. Spain & Hungary) still wanted changes to make the proposal more extreme. The cites you listed are the calendar (showing the meeting happened (knew that)) & the 2nd is the compromise text. Neither gives info on the states' positions.

@titaniumbiscuit @echo_pbreyer @chatcontrol It also gives exactly one sentence to the arguments opposing chatcontrol, while in the next quoting someone pro-chatcontrol grossly misrepresenting privacy activists as wanting free speech to include sexual abuse of children. I don't even know where to begin correcting the author of this article.
