Interesting article about single-line fonts by Tanguy Vanlaeys https://www.205.tf/articles/what-went-into-the-machine-and-what-came-out
He mentions most of the challenges I’ve encountered for the design of Desfeita https://www.nmtype.com/desfeita/

TF stands for Type Foundry and Typographie Française (French Typography). 205TF is a type foundry that showcases the work of independent type designers.

Does anyone recognize the letter shapes in this header? It was a newspaper printed in Ourense (Galicia, Spain) from 1910 to 1913. The typographer spent time in Paris and other European cities before printing this.

Hello, type people. We’re adding the e.g. alternate character into our new typeface, which we first introduced with Kinetic back in 2017. I’m a bit unsure whether to set it up as a localised option for both English and Spanish or to make it a stylistic alternate. I have a feeling that including it as a localised form would be better, since that way most users can actually see and use it, rather than it being hidden away. What would you do?

What about saying “invest” instead of “buy” when you pay for a font license? It gives a better sense of the value you get from your money.

Replying to
@tphinney@typo.social @kai@typo.social just to be clear, I didn’t pretend to remove the word “license” or “buy” from the process. My toughts about using the word “investment” are related to how we talk about the value (benefits) of getting the rights to use fonts

Replying to
@elih@typo.social “invest” as purchase with the expectation of benefit (not necesarily money). When someone invest in a new computer, for instance, they don’t expect to earn money from it but benefit from using it

Replying to
@elih limited/exclusive typefaces as NFTs will be more expensive, making fonts inaccessible and unaffordable for many. Many type designers, including myself, would not be happy with their typefaces being used/owned by a wealthy minority.

Replying to
@klim it includes founders, co-founders, partners, CEOs, and general managers. If you visit the resources page, there is a database with names and roles (more than those included in the sample). We created this list based on the public information available on foundries’ websites.

Replying to
@elih, the question is who develops open-source fonts? It's often a wealthy minority controlling the options. That’s not the future I hope for. Fortunately, there are still many independent, knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced entrepreneurs who design typefaces and develop fonts, and there is value in that. I insist, many fonts are affordable to a wide audience. Using free fonts and not paying for one is a personal choice, influenced by the value you place on each option.

Replying to
@embes@typo.social for sure, “font” gets less respect. That’s exactly why I propose finding ways to talk about them as valuable assets rather than just expenses.

Replying to
@klim@typo.social “invest” implies a benefit, not necessarily money. Just as an example, don’t you consider “buying fonts” as an “investment” for a design studio? Is not an investment when a library buy books?
