Last year, my colleagues and I asked you to participate in a survey about your stances regarding AI (and non-AI) automation in type design.

And wow, did you have things to say – thank you all for filling it in, and for sharing your thoughts and comments. Special thanks to our insightful and patient interviewees, and to our peer reviewers for their sharp and generous remarks.

We are happy to report that after the long slow grind of the academic publishing machinery, an article has been published in Visible Language:

https://www.visible-language.org/journal/issue-60-1-automation-type-design/

Again, many thanks from the team: @alicesavoie@typo.social, Wayne, Sebastian, Raphaela, and me.

Crazy idea here:

How about a redraw of Times that’s minimum 87% the same with maximum 13% overinflating that one weird feature of Times, and then naming it some anagram, or pun, or translation, of “times”, has anyone ever done that yet?

RE: @ketan@climatejustice.social

This, dear reader, is one of the reasons why I judge you for your stupid use of stupid AI tools.

The biggest companies on earth are rolling back their climate goals, no longer expedient, with tremendous environmental impact. All so that you can ask fucking ChatGPT a question you obviously don’t care whether the answer is correct.

@cjtype I am surprised how popular coding agents are for python scripting in font editors! How staunchly we defend drawing as something uniquely reserved for human designers, but writing the code (just as important for some of the most exciting and forward looking type design projects imo) is so easily put on a lesser level, undeserving of our attention, delegated; here, somehow our ethical concerns seem less pressing.

Jonathan Biss’ interpretation of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.3 on its own is quite remarkable, but as a part of his “Beethoven/5” cycle coordinates between Beethoven and contemporary composers, this one with a new work by Caroline Shaw is simply unmissable. I’ve known about it for five days and listened to it 12 times.

@cjtype CJ that’s really nice of you to offer, but dealing with customs is such a nuisance (let alone ripoff) here. Between that and shipping it’d be a €100 pencil. Unless you had planned a trip to Portugal of course, then I’ll pay you in food and wine for your courier services ;-)

@guayabito I haven’t searched for it very deeply but I’m getting zero hits so far. I did see it announced as a Japan-only collab, so there’s that. Cultpens in the UK has it but already qt a quite inflated price (presumably they import it themselves) and I can’t deal with all the customs hassle buying from either there or the UK.
