I started work on a new neural network based post-OpenType font format this morning, and I already have a working demo! You can copy, paste, delete, type, move the cursor around, move a kashida axis with a slider. It's all open source and made with the simplest possible neural network. https://elih.net/blog/neuraltype/

I am running autoreaseach loops all weekend to improve img2bez.

This is an unsolved problem in open-source vector graphics that can be numerically evaluated. There is low hanging fruit like this everywhere.

I think true modernists wanted free & open source AI automated design one hundred years ago.

Work in progress: a fork of Instrument Serif that turns it into a 400-900 weight variable font.

Open to critique and criticism, it's about 50/50 AI generated and hand drawn.

It's extremely buggy and broken right now, but I actually got QuiverAI somewhat working for tracing background images in Runebender Xilem.

If I can get this working, you just need a QuiverAI API key in ~/.config/runebender and hit Cmd+Shift+Y to trace a background image.

I'm working on a new feature for img2bez in Runebender Xilem that lets you use an existing outline and refit it onto a raster image.

To test this out, I'm using Claude Code and Nano Banana to make a variable font fork of Instrument Serif called Instruments Serif (weight range 400–900).

The compositor node I worked on for Fuser has typographic features like tracking, line height, variable font support, and kerning with Option + ← or → keys.

The goal was to achieve the same typographic detail as in Figma, InDesign, DrawBot, etc.

To appeal to a European audience, my v0.1.0 FOSS font editor project now has a happy hardcore theme song.

@typetogether Just my opinion, but this feels too humanist to me. There is nothing wrong with latanizing Arabic if the font is named after and part of a well known modernist European design. There is a rich tradition of geometric Arabic script design to draw from outside of European modernism, for this design I think you need to imagine an alternate history where Islam has more cultural influence in Europe and early modernist design. This design I am working on has a euro modernist vibe.

We don't talk enough about how much better UFO is than Glyphs for working with Claude Code.

The Font Engineering Licensing Board needs to revoke the credentials of everyone involved with pushing the Glyphs format.

Ethereum is to the Free Software movement and the hacker ethic and the Baháʼí Faith is to Islam.

I can finally talk about and show what I've been working on recently. I designed and built most of this compositor in Rust/WASM. I'm really proud of how it turned out!

@marsidesino @alphabettes I think the answer to these problems for proprietary fonts will be NFTs with all the complex licencing logic built-in. Plus you get real scarcity instead of legally enforced artificial scarcity.

@marsidesino I think 99% of fonts will be open source soon. The OFL basically won already. Prices fall to the marginal cost of production. Proprietary fonts are already unaffordable and unusable by most people. I have never paid for one. But NFT’s can also change the value proposition of digital goods from a scarcity based on limiting information access to one based on provable provenance, they have no need to rely on gatekeeping access to NFT content to secure value. https://elih.blog/diffuse-value-capture/

@marsidesino anyone can make an open source font and attach an NFT or crypto coin to it. Empowering everyone without gatekeepers is one of the great things about permissionless public blockchains. I buy NFTs from artists all the time and would happily do the same for type design. I just find proprietary licensing awkward and unusable, so I don't want to support that model. I'm also trying to convince Google Fonts to move away from commissioning work and switch to usage based creator payments.

@davidsudweeks This is why I use software engineering tools for design, and not the infantilizing tools marketed at prosumer designers.

Replying to
@marsidesino@typo.social You can't resell most font licences. If proprietary fonts exist in the near future (not sure they will due to AI and open source), NFTs and ZK-proofs in some kind of blockchain DRM system would make this work!

@sol@typo.social yes, even if I lost money on this. I now live in a country where I have the financial freedom to use and build on crypto.
