@stefano We got a thermopump installed and the chap was « …and now you have to enter the wifi credentials. » « Can we not do it? » « Sorry? » « Will it work if we don’t connect it to the wifi? » « Oh, I guess it will… » I can’t believe how normalized spyware is now.

@amydiehl@mstdn.social There’s a paywall. Would you share the link to the scientific paper?

@anna_lillith@mas.to I wish politicians would make promises like « I’ll double the bird populations. There will be sooo many birds in you backyard when you wake up! »

@cwebber@social.coop Also, it's not just the internet. We had a flurry of freedom-restraining laws in Quebec (against the social sector, unions, protesters, etc. as well as laws to defang individual freedoms and rights protections).

@cwebber@social.coop I think I want to post "Fuck C-22" posters (or something nicer, because I'm a public servant) all over Ottawa. Are there designs to work from around?

@Paulatics@mstdn.ca I’ve had this anger pent up for a while; it’s so liberating to hear you express it so well. Amazing speech.

@Tutanota Scratching my head: say we assume the best intents, is it better or worse than sending those requests to external server? Silent bloat or spyware?

@WizardOfDocs @brooke @ZachWeinersmith I did my postdoc in Pittsburgh just before covid and barely heard "yinz" – but it is true I was mostly frequenting academics, who came from elsewhere. And maybe local want to spare me when they hear my French accent. But I did get the sense it was disappearing.

@ntnsndr No quota. I now reject around 90%, because it comes from high mandatory APC journals that send me stuff that should get desk-rejected. My good will has been spent by now. But I would be willing to do 5-10 if I was getting decent submissions.

@elduvelle_neuro If the question is about the form of representation, there’s abundant research on concepts showing that the answer is: in several ways (Édouard Machery made that case in philosophy, but there are other accounts). I think it’s probably true of stories or other memories as well. I suspect we might even be able to learn new ways of storing information (e.g. when we learn to code). And that we might leverage several forms and methods for a single memory.

@ntnsndr @fpianz Seems a bit less egregious to me. APCs create incentives for volume. And I think authors might be more vulnerable.

Je viens d'apprendre qu'il y a un site du Crétacée à Schefferville: https://www.quebecscience.qc.ca/sciences/roches-fossiles-surprenants-trouves-schefferville/

Aucune idée de comment c'est possible.

@neuralreckoning@neuromatch.social There’s a wider weirdness, with a lot of people being very anti-LLM in general, but who are also using it a lot in very specific ways (some specific coding pattern, some thing they struggle with in writing, reading, etc). I guess talking about products might be about this?

@cwebber@social.coop 💯 and will go on and on about how they hate LLMs, until you realize they either have a Claude or ChatGPT subscription or local models running nonstop or both
