*Tinfoil hat on* I doubt it's a coincidence that the last 10, 15 years things like cryptocurrencies, "metaverse", "AI" are becoming popular, just as "lines" in the computing industry flatten: as the computer has been perfected, an _economy of waste_ is created to sustain appetite for growth. Computers (phones, tablets &c are computers) have become longer term investments; even if you have abundant money, the latest devices aren't necessarily upgrades that bring anything new to the table. We've _done_ computing, we finished it back in 2010s mostly. That's a plateau in demand for new devices, or it would be, w/o the saviour of computing wastage industry. Cryptocurrency wastes storage and processors, "AI" wastes memory and processors, "metaverse", ads, cloud etc waste networking bandwidth. So we use much more computing resources than we need. Computing wastage also inflates the income of fossil fuel industry. Its useless activities and the infrastructure to support all that is powered--where it's not pure speculation and is actually built out--frequently by dirty electricity. I think that explains a lot about govt & corpo interest esp in "AI" right now. It's a growth driver. It's a line mover upper. It's a conduit of money to an otherwise stagnating tech and dirty energy sector. *Tinfoil hat off*

Computers have ruined everything they touched, and made much more difficult everything they were supposed to facilitate.

I miss the old days of bureaucracy where dumbfuck web pages and stupid apps weren't part of the picture. I'd rather go from office to office papers in hand than fight fucked up web pages at home with nobody to talk to when shit goes wrong.

Fuck computers. Fuck internet. This shit was meant to be a communication convenience, not a ridiculously bullshit replacement for every interaction with every institution.

Now I am your average landlubber but I hear there are these things called waves at sea, which means spinning disks are out of question, all cables need to be specially made or picked to allow for bolting down, you need to make sure ram sticks or graphics cards don't come flying off the servers when they may do so even while transporting a PC on the highway, and the only reliable way to bring in a sysadmin or engineer quickly is via some rope dangling from an helicopter Definitely an idea only some coder who has never seen a server room could come up with I bet LNG based generators also best work while being hit by tall waves, that's probably the optimal operating environment! https://circumstances.run/@davidgerard/117044807754764530 @davidgerard@circumstances.run

We should get building web directories again. Curated, collaborative, intentional.

The age of the search engine is gone by.

https://discuss.kde.org/t/framework-becomes-a-kde-patron/45701/10

This is incredible. Basically KDE is telling us some 150 dorks decide everything and "community" doesn't matter, ofc because "community" is a fiction

Well, I'm done with KDE forever

Framework becomes a KDE Patron
KDE Discuss

Framework becomes a KDE Patron

I would say following the code of conduct and other community guidelines shouldn’t be treated as a “purity test”. This is the CEO saying this, not a random employee, not a random community member, but the person leading the company. Could you point me to the rectification? From what’s been said and done in public, I believe the GNOME folks tried to contact Nirav Patel to allow him to correct this and he refused. Can you ask them internally to confirm or deny this? Wouldn’t the slippery-slop.

Any recommendations for an introductory textbook on social theory?

I am preparing a syllabus for myself to catch up on social theory, chiefly from Marx up to post-colonial/structuralist stuff, as relates to history in particular and humanities an social sciences in general, as it's an area I'm sorely lacking in.

I've some particular interests like Marxism, feminism, and Bourdieu, but I am thinking perhaps following a textbook would be more productive and would be less likely to lead to blind spots.

If you know of a good "introduction to social theory" syllabus that's very welcome recommendation too.

I can recognise and differentiate between old Apple skeumorphic icons on any display and context, and I didn't even use an Apple product before 2024.

@soviut@hachyderm.io @heliographe_studio@mastodon.social So icons can be skeumorphic/ornamented and pretty so long as they have distinctive outlines, got it. That'd also explain why I frequently find myself finding it difficult to say pick apps in most UIs these days because the icons are all the same shape, stupid rounded rectangles.

@soviut@hachyderm.io @heliographe_studio@mastodon.social Interesting then that everywhere I read hear and see people complaining they can't distinguish icons and notice interactive elements and failing to interact with them properly, all from very computer literate to those who only know how to operate facebook and the caller app on their phones (of which, many in my family). If they're in rectangles, especially in the way they are nowadays in Android and iOS, they _are_ rectangles, when the colour etc of those rectangles are used as distinctive features. I also have some mild accessibility needs as my sight issues while nothing near blindness still render current design trends detrimental to my experience. And rarely if ever do I hear any praise from actual disabled people on that front. Icons are one aspect, as these "squircle" icons require me to focus my sight more acutely than normal, and strain my eyes. Along with how light themes have become dark grey on bright white it means screens frequently give me splitting headaches. As for clickability, it's contextual. A grid of icons on a phone screen or a line of icons on a dock perfectly signal clickability. People don't have much of an issue with file icons on desktop either, especially non techies I frequently observe or help out in family or at uni. Nor do they seem to think a tabular listing in Finder is inert. (I am arguing based not on the rightmost icon in the OP but the two preceding it btw. But even the rightmost is better than left ones.)

@robinhouston@mathstodon.xyz Huh, usually I can't reproduce these finds but now I get this as well. Interestingly enough, I get the same formula but a different initial constant, 3.6-something. And it is consistent between refreshes and new tabs and even different browsers, i.e. I get that same number. Weird.
