I've been playing around with this GeForce 2 MX and I think maybe hardware enthusiasts are slightly elitist because it was actually a really good experience and ran the games I tried (American McGee's Alice and Return to Castle Wolfenstein) at a locked 70 at 640x480, mid-30s maxed at 1024x768 in OS 9. Though it is OS 9 and not Windows 98 SE... my preconceived notion that it would perform like an N64 (no offense, it's my favorite console) were unfounded.

With #Marchintosh over and more importantly Nvidia's announcement that they're going all in on the Iran War, I'm proud to announce the return of STB Systems™! Our first product will be a rerun of 3dfx Voodoo cards, selectable 4/12MB, to be followed down the line by a 2D/3D combination card combining S3™ Trio64 and Voodoo 2 chipsets, and from there branching to custom though Glide compatible DDR & DDR2 era OpenGL chipsets and cards. Board SIs free to contact once chipsets are announced available.

I made an account on Bluesky just to promote my paintings and writings and good lord is 100% of my home feed just orange man bad. And yes, he is bad, but this is the case having never selected the politics interest in their interests picker.

This is obviously incorrect, but it's a general approximation of what you might have found in early Xbox development hardware of the time, official or not. I think they would want prototype GeForce 256es because they fully support DX7, but for early testing a TNT2 Ultra would work in a pinch, or maybe a Matrox G400.

I think the MacBook Neo should have an 11 inch variant. People say it would have too small a keyboard, but the 11 inch iPad air has a Magic Keyboard no issue.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer That is, besides Raptor machines, there's Microwatt and the Libre-SoC offshoot which promised a huge efficiency gain in vector software (that is ~50-75% reduction in instruction count in both binaries and running code vs amd64), a thing RV is notoriously terrible at because most RV processors have their vector processor off-die. This means stuff like getting passed over for box64 and other such porting efforts. Libre-SoC had trouble getting funding and had to shut down, too.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer and this is incredibly petty and not its fault but all the hype around RV and its open ISA, besides being pointless (all of the implementations use blobs and for the most part are closed off, creating an open one will take years to decades), completely ignored PowerPC going to the Linux Foundation in 2019, meaning that an ISA with a track record of competitiveness is already available and floundering because it's not the blessed child, in spite of having an open implementation.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer I should say, to be fair, RV is intended for and works great in embedded. It's just being forced into a role it's really not made for due to hype, leading to a bunch of hardware being made that isn't well supported over time, I've heard of a lot of driver problems that never get resolved before development stops because a new thing gets released instead, kind of the same problem as cell phones but it's laptops/mITX boards that draw 120w for C2D performance (MV Pioneer).

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer Mostly it's banal. Black boxes as you've said (also Microsoft Pluton which is implemented in AMD and Qualcomm offerings), power efficiency isn't great on either, a little contrarianness. RV has ISA fragmentation as a feature which means you can never be quite sure your CPU supports anything as basic as multiplication (maybe a bigger worry in embedded), RVI is really indiscriminate to the point they rubberstamp ad copy for barely-not-scams like ROMA and its "AI powered speakers",

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer Clearly they could get cards made in whatever form factor they want if they could get one made in their own so new card availability doesn't exactly play into it, and for cooling, they could still keep the cooling cartridge while having it be MXM in the underlying PCB. This segment was wrong so I deleted it. Plus, if their chassis ever has to be redesigned in such a way the cartridge does too, supply of new cards kinda depends on how long they'll support legacy platforms.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer Having to fit in a MacBook-sized chassis means you only have so much battery space, which isn't great with a bunch of socketed components, that's one reason why the industry as a whole trends away from that and it's something especially early adopters learned with their 6 hour battery lives, for instance, where if you had batteries that were ~18650 thickness you could easily supply a 100w one for airplanes and who knows how big for ground use. Could possibly make them a cart too

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer Ultimately, I think that having their own standard because of some perception that MXM is "dead" (it's not like that stopped them from using SODIMM rather than CAMM, so...?) is a bad precedent for repairability in the long term. Nobody but Framework themselves and people within the ecosystem will ever want to support it because it would be a SKU nightmare to have different variations for all the different laptop chassis multiplied by all the different GPU SKUs.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer If they were going to go that way, they could have just spent the R&D time and budget on just making the concept work with it in the first place, it's almost certainly not hard. If they made it a cartridge still, they would probably be able to shave some of the thickness that the screw posts would have added off by not needing screw posts. 500 character limit, yay...

How should I split this 64GB CF card? I thought it was 32GB but it's 64 which is nice. I can either do 50/50 Windows 2000/Mandrake 8.1, 25/75 one of them, split it into three with BeOS or Haiku... any thoughts welcome. #retrocomputing

So my maternal grandfather was Native, and I know what tribe and everything, but I wasn't raised into that culture and neither was my mother who was raised into general Mexican culture. Is that a potential pitfall for cultural appropriation or do I have more leniency?

I don't really care what someone has been accused of, it could be the most heinous thing imaginable, I'm still against execution and permanent revocation of rights. The false conviction rate here is between 6 and 10% of people. I'm not comfortable executing 1% of people wrongly, let alone 10%.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer I dunno, sorry about kinda harshing your enthusiasm (trust me, I've been in your shoes), it's definitely way closer than just about anything else on the market and I'd take it over it being soldered on at least. The main thing really is just I'm very specifically not buying amd64 (I also have reasons not to like RISC-V and DeepComputing in particular but I'll save them), otherwise I'd actually really like the 13 inch, we need more 3:2 laptops in the world.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer I'm sure they didn't have lockng people into their ecosystem in mind but it's hard not to wonder given their company being built on using as many pre-existing open standards as possible and then suddenly out of nowhere this happens. Honestly, I kind of think that their choice to target the modern laptop weight and size profile is kind of working directly against what they could achieve if they instead used modern miniaturization and applied it to a 90s laptop chassis.

@AVincentInSpace@furry.engineer I thought so, but no, those screws make it completely different and way more like MXM (which I really think they should have just used). Even if the standard is theoretically open, I don't really care for the way they implemented it being tied specifically to their own chassis. But even besides that, I haven't been keeping up but last time I checked it was just amd64 and RISC-V and I really don't care for either, I get a PowerPC one is unlikely but ARM would be nice at least.

I get why the non-rugpull legacy revival brands start off with clones of their old hardware; the demand is obviously still there and who better than them to fill it? But I think it's a shame most of them have no vision beyond that and maybe a T-shirt or plushie. If I was in that position, I'd try to look into new products that fit the philodophy of the company being revived.

There are many good things about Linux. The fact you can swap GPU companies with no work or driver installation is one of them, kmods are fantastic.
