Reticulum was never meant to be a Python project. One implementation of a protocol spec is a single point of failure with good branding.

Four independent Rust stacks exist: Leviculum, Ratspeak, Beechat, FreeTAKTeam.

Why it matters: a native Rust core needs 2 to 5 MB RAM, not 35 to 60 MB for embedded CPython, and survives the Android culling that kills Python daemons.

The real risk isn't Rust. It's fragmentation with no shared conformance suite.

One Protocol, Many Engines: Reticulum

Reticulum was designed as a protocol, not a product: four independent Rust implementations are proving it, with real consequences for native mobile mesh apps.

In 1976, Bill Gates called hobbyists thieves for sharing software they'd written for each other. A property claim, not a philosophy. It's happening again, bigger. The digital commons wasn't destroyed; it was absorbed: a free fix for cut services, industry-funded R&D, cloud enclosure that stops copyleft triggering. AI goes further: it trains on the commons, floods it with slop, and isolates contributors chat by chat. https://gaggl.com/blogs/2026-07-14-what-the-commons-built/ #DigitalCommons #OpenSource #AI

You paid $250 for a thermostat. Three years later, the company was acquired. The device still worked. The servers it depended on didn't. This is not bad luck. This is the business model. And it's the same model being applied to agricultural technology, farm management software, and precision irrigation platforms. https://sein.com.au/articles/your_smart_home_is_a_rental/ #Selfhosted #HomeAssistant #LocalFirst #Privacy #OpenSource #SmartHome #IndieWeb

What can biology teach us about building better technology? By drawing parallels between microbial networks and the Reticulum protocol, I explore why the future of society looks less like a corporate pyramid and more like a mycelial web. https://sein.com.au/articles/network-as-mycelial-web/ #SystemsThinking #Biomimicry #Decentralisation #Reticulum #Mycelium

Aussie #PSA - should be compulsory viewing:

Japanese Government makes more revenue taxing its imports of Australian gas than the Australian Government makes from the export of our gas.

Not only has Australia been literally giving more than half of the gas we export away for free, we now learn that the same Japanese Government that is opposed to us putting a tax on our gas and coal exports, has been raking in billions of dollars per year via their own tax on gas and coal imports.

This video is a clip from the Senate Select Committee on Taxation of Gas Resources, 21/04/2026

Speakers:
Dr Richard Denniss, co-CEO, the Australia Institute
Konrad Benjamin, Founder, Punter’s Politics

The screeching from the usual reactionaries and the boomer fear merchants has already started even though the budget has not even been announced:

Of course, the same crowd that also opposes any fair revenue from the gas industry ripping off the country.

Just remember, today is as good as any to start to finally start the #BoycottMurdoch you've been planning.

What if “positivity” isn’t just a mood, but a constraint on thought? Looking at how enforced optimism flattens disagreement, discourages scrutiny, and quietly narrows what can be said—or even considered. When critique itself starts to feel like a violation, it’s not kindness winning out—it’s inquiry being sidelined.

'No change in our position' - Resources Minister on proposed gas tax - ABC listen

The prime minister is poised to kill off a move to increase taxes on gas giants, echoing the industry's argument that exporters are already paying tens of billions of dollars in taxes each year. The ABC has spoken to several senior sources who say they do not believe a new gas tax was being "seriously considered" and that, three weeks out from budget, no such plan had been brought to cabinet. Today is the the final day of public hearings for the Greens-led Senate inquiry into Australia&#x

Replying to
@davidho Unfortunately, that's not a surprise. It was all part of the plan. They've spelled it out before. The disheartening part was that people still voted for it. And now they are beginning to pay for it. It will haunt us for a long time to come.

In 2011 I wrote "Facebook - good riddance!" and never looked back. This post is the opposite: no relief.

What kept me on Flickr was never the company. It was an open licence and a shared habit of attribution. That practice deserves a home no company controls.

So I'm building FediFlick (AGPL): one composer, five destinations, Flickr among them. A second home for that practice, not a replacement.

Not a good riddance post. A thank you.
