@davidrevoy 11 years already, huh? Back then when I was 20 I read all of Discworld in under a year. And then Pterry died. What did I cry then! Now I am reading the books to my child, just now came back from reading Soul Music until he sleeps. And so things live one. First through us, now through our children. So now I am crying again. He wrote "No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away". Pterry has not caused ripples, but giant waves. Let my tears make sure the waves never calm down. Also been thinking this for a long while, but I think you'd be perfect for illustrating Tiffany Aching series. Like Paul Kidby is great and beloved, but Tiffany Aching expresses strength, and your drawing is really good at exrpressing strength. I am sure he would have loved your illustrations. Last vielleicht ne halbe Stund, also grob 100W.

@Aphelion@mastodon.sdf.org The Moon is but a dusty mirror In the face of the gleaming sun, and the sun is insignificant, just one among countless stars. Yet still in the darkness of the night we raise our eyes up to the sky and from the dark it seems the brightest of them all.

@cmister26 @hart Ein ICE braucht grob 16 Wh/m, also auf ½ km grob 8 kWh. E-Auto 150-200 Wh/km, also auf 50 km grob 7.5-10 kWh. Also so grob passen die Zahlen schon zam.

@maxelcat@universeodon.com @Aphelion@mastodon.sdf.org It is a poem about perspective and relative importance. So no, the sun is not insignificant, from our perspective. From the perspective of the universe it just a rather small one of many. Still for us it means the world.

@davidrevoy@framapiaf.org I'm not sure so far. ML has valid applications, and so far what Mozilla has brought to the table seems very reasonable to me. Most important thing for me is that everything is local and privacy friendly. And the features they have are very reasonable: An alt-text generation model makes a lot of sense for people to whom alt-texts matter. And local translation of websites also sounds like a really nice feature. As far as I see such features will make the web more accessible with better privacy.

For me the most important things are:

  1. ML should be local and not send arbitrary data to shady third party services
  2. ML should be build to only affect performance when you actually need it
  3. ML should provide specific tools, not general purpose blackboxes

Also 4. ML should be trained in a responisble way, which means:

  1. Responsible source of training data
  2. Resource use of training should be justified by the benefit of the functionality

I remember the time when ML was mosty an exciting University thing, where results were shared, and not some big corporation BS. I am not against going back in that direction.

But you know, digiKam has been using public models for facial recognition and matching for years now. And I don't think anything bad came from it.

I am currently in the position of saying: Wait and see what mozilla does. And if it turns out the wrong way, there are forks. That's the beauty of open source.

You are probably right, even though acting like affine linear transform + activation function was a hybrid CNN tranformer network is weird. But you say you aren't. Then what is your point?
