After basically a decade I am again designing a web from scratch. HTML structure, CSS presentation, images, ...
Man, I forgot most of the syntax and patterns, and building it up again feels like going uphill.
Last time I *knew* #CSS, flexbox support was about 50:50, animations were getting started, you used Sass for variables, and :has was a dream.
I am in a train and my eye is itchy and my hands have touched stuff all around and I am suffering.
Do civil engineers also suffer from "these plans make no sense, I will design it myself"?
My next website is shipping with Windows 95/98 aesthetics. I love how clean the design language is. Someone already posted it today, but the April 1st "joke redesigns" are a peak.

In case anyone wanted to nerdsnipe themselves, this is all I am seeing. The udev rule is mine, not sure if it helped or made things worse.
Today at work, I had to review two extremely slop work reports. One engineer is still young and it is fixable, for the other I have no hope.
Good thing AI can be as bitchy about code quality as it can provide slop. Saved me like an hour today. It's far from perfect, but well enough to prove a point.

Juat spent two hours failing to rewrite and deploy Zulip compose as quadlets. The feel of me being bad at deploying services is growing, but so I am more and more convinced all these services are just badly designed for interfacing with somethibg that isn't their homegrown shell script no one understands.
I am getting more and more into Breakout 71. Rouge-like brick breaking wasn't on my 2026 list of addictions.

I use many Podman hardening features, so in the volume mount, I have configured without thinking
Volume=/home/prosody/data/:/var/lib/prosody/:rw,U,Z
without realizing the 'U' changes the ownership of the directory. So I'd run 'chown' by hand and rootful Podman would overwrite it every time I restarted the container to try the fix out.
Sorry for shitting on your software, I know how hard vertical integration is. I feel bad every time I complain and the maintainers come to help me :|

I am not a soup person, and the only thing I use spoons for is to pick up hard-boiled eggs to put them into the cold water to cool them down.

@mattj@floss.social For me, it is mostly about control and stack transparency. I already have Caddy doing the certificate management, I'd prefer if I didn't have to keep in mind some certificates exist elsewhere.
From purely technical standpoint... It makes it really hard to deploy in airgapped environments. Plus I don't want to get rate limited by Let's Encrypt if I misconfigure the setup.
And there's the whole digital sovereignity thing, with Let's Encrypt being a US company. It is fine for now, but what about in a year or two?

@menel I make the setup much more complicated than it needs to be, by having own container configurations on top of immutable OS. It literally may be just a skill issue on my side when I mistranslate one configuration style into the other.
I'll try again sometime soon, when I have energy to fight it.
