Thanks to the FEC and OpenSecrets we're able to find who's lobbying and funding the age verification laws.

Interestingly enough it turns out the same entities are the largest funders of the UK Online Safety Act, California's Age-Appropriate Design Code, Digital Age Assurance Act and New York's SAFE for Kids Act. so here it is:

Oak Foundation funds:

  • 5Rights Foundation (they run the Kids Code Coalition and are UK based)
  • Fairplay
  • Common Sense Media

Oak Foundation is funded solely by Alan M. Parker the British billionaire who co-founded Duty Free Shoppers.

Common Sense Media (one of Oak's funded orgs) is also independently funded by:

  • Bezos Family Foundation
  • Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI)
  • Gates Foundation
  • Dell Foundation
  • Craig Newmark Philanthropies
  • Hewlett Foundation
  • Tom Steyer / Kat Taylor

Combined, the funding flowing into this advocacy ecosystem exceeds $100M/year.

Now you know.

@mcc@mastodon.social @emjonaitis@mathstodon.xyz For context this flags people using agentic coding, i.e., having Claude code running on your machine, actively going through your folders and making changes. If they allow Claude to commit, it will do so under its own name unless disabled. This is the same with Cursor and Gemini. The .claude folder in repos means they're using Claude to write the code; it's a per-project config file for the tool. It's similar to a .cursor file; it means it was used to write the code and is a better indicator than the co-authored commit.

I need to make a correction: we do not actually know whether Oak is funded solely by Alan and his family, as the foundation is based in Switzerland and its funding sources are not fully transparent.

Apologies for the earlier error.

Been seeing a lot of misleading claims from ID and age verification vendors lately. Let's be clear.

- Client-side only face scan
- Client-side only ID info extraction
- Client-side only image to info comparison
- Client-side only integrity witness
- Server-side only gets 18+ or no (no other data, hash, or telemetry)

If the implementation deviates from that at any step, the privacy claim is marketing, not architecture.

The technical bar exists. It can be met and would satisfy all; UK, American, and Australian laws even on browsers. it's just inconvenient to meet it.

@badtux There's an ever-increasing subset of people in security whose only skill set is to get platformed or have their product platformed and proceed to talk about things they have 0 understanding of.

For those wondering, there aren't any U.S.-made consumer routers from any of the known brandss

You'd have to use the locked-down version from your ISP, switch to enterprise offerings such as Ubiquiti or make your own with tools like OPNsense.

Using a statistical model to solve a pathfinding problem that has a definitive answer is such an interesting engineering choice.

@bigcalm MinIO open source is no longer maintained; it's fully archived. https://github.com/minio/minio They only sell the paid version, and you're better off with Garage, which is where most people migrated to.
