Eternal tech optimist, but not the way you think. I keep expecting this stuff to actually work, and keep braking the most basic stuff out there.

I've worked with Linux stuff for a long time, some times specializing, sometimes not. Currently working at Amedia.

I like difficult problems, accuracy in language and technology that is older than 5 years.

I love having to make two separate lists of ACLs for cloudflare. One for identifying the legitimate CDN nodes that we use and pay for and want to allow, obviously, and one for the other half of the prefix where we're seeing constant bot traffic that cloudflare apparently mask for other customers and behaves exactly like abusive bots, and even more so on the parts of our infrastructure not behind cloudflare. how is this shit even remotely legal...

Trying to read some Swedish news (as a Norwegian), and while understanding spoken Swedish is pretty straight forward, reading Swedish makes me wonder if we shouldn't send a large team of speech and language therapists over the border.

Alerting built on top of grafana? Jesus christ. And don't get me started on Prometheus. And for graphs, that's at least easy? Hahhahah just one giant fucking mess of a myriad of equally awful storage engines which have sketchy at best integration with grafana, which is apparently the gold standard of graphs and they can't even make a default palet where you don't draw dark red lines on a dark grey background. And I've never ever seen a tidy grafana setup. Ever.

Helping ny niece with programming homework was interesting. General flow, Python, flask, jinja2 was a non issue, but html and css is considerably more demanding. No frameworks or anything, but no wrapping everything in
either. Python I can just read and understand, but specially CSS feels a lot more magical with new and to me, who've only ever dabbled, unfamiliar variables that there's no way to intuitivly know what does.

Every single tool we have and use is designed for enterprise use. But each tool is for *different* enterprises so they don't even follow any single theme.

@ellane I'm 42, and I'm out of practice. I can mostly read it just fine, but then the first "e" in "there" gets a bit compacted and suddenly reads like and "i", and that "fair" took a good bit of re-reading. So I suppose it depends? It might also be a bit harder since english is my second language, and my exposure to english words in cursive is almost non existent, so my ability to fill in the blanks is reduced compared to reading Norwegian in cursive.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange I remember we had a big new 200Gb/s connection at a LAN party some 10++ years ago and someone wanted to push the bandwidth and REALLY didn't think it through, went on PA and asked 5000 people to "download from somewhere fast, like the Oslo university FTP server!"... fifteen minutes later the ftp admins called us and asked us to knock it off, which, of course we did. Problem solved, no-one got blocked, no hard feelings, because hey, people talk to each other.... Not so easy with AI.

@quad@akko.quad.moe And that's sort of the natural difference. What we do with browsers now is vastly different fron what we did twenty years ago, but honestly, the back ends are mostly the same. Just in a different font. This feels natural to me. I don't mind. It just means that since my last big CSS update was ~10 years ago, I can't really follow what modern CSS is doing.

And just how many different tools do you need to "ship metrics and logs"? And scraping? So now absolutely everything is supposed to have a fucking web server built in. Brilliant.

I thought AIs over use of em-dash was a joke/meme, but I just discovered that the comments in our robots.txt now contains an em dash because the script to update it was written with ai.

Ironically the comment says "AI crawler - training and scraping", followed by a lot of disallows.

The most quoted post in the fediverse, by a landslide margin, is "post pending".

@quad@akko.quad.moe Ah, don't get me wrong, I'm not really critiquing CSS. I've been using CSS for over two decades and enjoy it, but always in a single project where I learn what current CSS and do some fairly good work with it and then move on. My first big use of it provided a lot of interactive navigation with zero javascript, as that still wasn't too useful. But the difference is that CSS is much more of a moving target. You set a crapton of parameters that may not have existed last time I used CSS.
