#3GoodThings
1 cucumber juice
2 50% of the people I saw in the bakery had masks
3 so many cute dogs out and about (including one who was pulling his person up the hill on a skateboard?!)

I am neither handy nor diligent when it comes to #bike maintenance, but I finally cleaned and oiled my chain and suddenly I am that guy wondering why everyone is going so slowly along the Comm Ave Mall 😜

I finally read _That Librarian_, the memoir by Louisiana librarian Amanda Jones - strong recommendation, I encourage everyone interested in civics to read it.

Do you know where to turn off the water to your house if you need to?

@BBC_News_Labs@social.bbc I read the blog post and saw nothing about how they are measuring the performance of LLMs at this task, or how they are validating the results. Also no info about the resources that would be required to catalog this data the "old-fashioned way" with human indexers using a controlled vocabulary, or a "formerly novel" approach like crowdsourced tags.

After reading this essay, I can't wait until Heather Hogan writes a book

https://thesicktimes.org/2025/03/18/the-sick-soft-butch-who-did-how-confronting-a-racist-in-my-neighborhood-helped-me-claim-my-long-covid-identity/

The sick soft butch who did: How confronting a racist in my neighborhood helped me claim my Long COVID identity - The Sick Times
The Sick Times - Chronicling the Long COVID crisis

The sick soft butch who did: How confronting a racist in my neighborhood helped me claim my Long COVID identity - The Sick Times

The last thing I thought before I smashed, face first, into the New York City sidewalk, was, Dang, my wife's going to want me to start taking my cane with me everywhere I go. But mostly, I was worried one of my neighbors would watch me tumble over and go limp.

Hi folks, any recommendations for #bike shops selling and maintaining #ebikes (especially #tricycles and/or #AdaptiveBikes) within striking distance of #PortlandME in #Maine? 🙏

@alexh@fediscience.org @hildabast@mastodon.online @PLOS@mstdn.science @OpenAlex@mastodon.social Re the question of PubMed being "polluted" by low-quality journals' content - I think we have to be pretty explicit with users about which recommended tools have the PubMed/WOS Core Collection "quality control" approach, and which recommended resources have the "we offer it all" approach like OpenAlex/Lens. The new Martin Kulldorff journal to which Hilda refer? Its content has DOIs and is in Crossrefred and is in OpenAlex

@alexh@fediscience.org @hildabast@mastodon.online @PLOS@mstdn.science @OpenAlex@mastodon.social I like having a choice of bibliographic databases, some with the gated approach and some with the hoover-it-all-up approach - but problems can arise when users treat one kind like the other.

"USDA’s press office provided an emailed response. As part of the Trump administration’s efforts to “improve government [and] eliminate inefficiencies,” the head librarian of the National Agricultural Library “determined which subscriptions were the most widely used, and USDA determined the subscriptions contracts with minimal use will be terminated,” the statement says." Minimal use? Their AAAS subscription got "minimal use"?

Hi #medlibs, I missed this in Feb - NCI (which is part of NIH just like NCBI and NLM are) removed the term Transgender Identity from its controlled vocabulary.

@ticho@mas.to @brentpatterson@mastodon.art Makes it hard to swallow that I spent 20 minutes today using my knowledge of copyright to explain to some poor comms staffer, who just wants to send out a link to an article and have it not be paywalled, "for THESE people, link A will work, but for THOSE people, you'll need to get link B with special tracking cruft from the corresponding author," all so the publisher can have a sustainable business model of charging $5k APC or $40 per download.

@marcusdeh@indieweb.social @swachter@toot.boston So, in US-centric terms, it's like if Nexis Uni or Factiva had a browser plugin that helps you access the licensed version of paywalled news content? On the one hand, that would be amazing. On the other, I don't know if I'd install a plugin that gave RELX or Dow Jones & Company access to all my web surfing....

@natalie There are some details about the embargo period etc. The website https://shareyourpaper.org/ makes it very easy to comply with those requirements. I would suggest uploading the accepted manuscript now (while you still have it handy) and Share Your Paper will apply the terms of the Brill policy. They won't make it public until the embargo has run out.

@natalie I think there is some poetic justice in an article about knowledge dissemination getting disseminated not only in paywalled form but also in (completely legal!) green open access via self-archiving

Should gas-powered decorative hearths and outdoor heaters be covered, together, by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act?

https://www.federalregister.gov/public-inspection/2025-03839/energy-conservation-program-withdrawal-of-determination-of-miscellaneous-gas-products-as-a-covered
RFI will be officially published tomorrow and public comment will be accepted for a month after that

Lots of publishers have webpages aggregating the calls for papers at all that publisher's journals
https://www.sciencedirect.com/browse/calls-for-papers
https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/open-call-for-papers
https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/resources/calls-for-papers
https://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/call-for-papers/
Why can't they be aggregated beyond the individual publisher level?

Just saw an interesting CFP from RWJ, about the Health Science Knowledge System.
https://www.rwjf.org/en/grants/active-funding-opportunities/2025/exploring-equitable-futures.html
It's amazing how far that CFP seems from the technocratic Evidence Synthesis Infrastructure Collective reports I read yesterday....
