What am I to the deafening roar of the macrocosmos? Nothing much. Just a vessel to carry the message of friendship to y'all beasts and dirt.

Also I'm a mostly-PHP full stack web developer who does kinda conventional stuff kinda unconventional ways ... or maybe kinda unconventional things in kinda conventional ways if you zoom out far enough? It all just keeps coming around, you know?

@dianea@lgbtqia.space @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Seriously. I get great peace of mind from the fact that I put some FireStop canisters above my stove. Back when I used less advanced ones I also hung them above my 3D printers. I keep fire extinguishing stuff *everywhere*. Extinguishers throughout the house, and a little one in the car. The other day I saw a car catching fire on the side of the road and I was like "OMG IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE" but then a fire truck pulled up as I was making U-turn to get to them.

@ansuz@gts.cryptography.dog that’s a thing that’s been constantly baffling me. Not only are we building a ridiculous number of data centers, we’re consistently building them in just incredibly stupid places. Like the newest one near me is in a desert town that we’ve KNOWN is overdrawing their aquifer for 40 years. Yet they just keep sinking more municipal wells and giving more water to corporations for essentially nothing in return. They built a damn bottled water factory too!

I'm the Perl guy at 4:01. Except it's PHP, and 2007.

"In 2007 I'd have shipped this with one PHP script and a cron job!"

"PHP."

"The whole company would run on it."

"Society would run on it."

"No containers."

"No YAML."

"Just regular expression."

@r_alb@mastodon.social Yup. I build web apps at a university and one of my central tenets over the years has always been "we can't accidentally leak what we don't have." Collecting RSVPs for an event, the form has fields for phone number and mailing address? Have we ever once used that information for anything? No? Gone from the form. Why were we even doing that? The list of graduates includes students with privacy flags on their accounts and the site filters them out at runtime? What happens if somebody breaks that someday? Now we've leaked the names of all these students who are hiding from stalkers or whatever. That's a disaster. Why not just delete those records from the database and filter them out during the import process entirely so our site cannot possibly even know they exist in the first place?

Hot take: Automatics are good. CVTs are great. Fake shifts in CVTs are idiotic. The holy five-speed is tired boomer bullshit.

Calendars starting the week on Sunday is a capitalist mind game. Set yours to start on Saturday or Monday and regain full visibility/awareness of your weekends.

@robin@social.riley.pub There was a guy who spent YEARS apparently earnestly thinking his email address was scott@ a domain I own. It was honestly kind of exhausting.

Web UX tip: You don't need to make a 2FA field a password field with the asterisks. A 2FA code doesn't need to be kept secret. That is, in fact, *kinda the entire point of a 2FA code!*

Making it a password field just confuses my password manager so that it asks me if I'm changing my password to "6397".

Hey more hardcore #infosec people: Do you know of any exploits involving threat actors somehow using Microsoft's Bingbot crawler to crawl/scout targets? I ask because I've been seeing pretty intelligent-seeming vulnerability-probing at nonexistent URLs, and it's coming from IP ranges that are registered to Microsoft, and the ones with hostnames are like msnbot-[ip].search.msn.com

I spent all day thinking I might be under the crosshairs of an APT-type situation, but now I'm starting to suspect that Bingbot is just suddenly doing insane stuff that looks like intelligent penetration testing in logs.

It honestly feels plausible that Microsoft have just fired up some kind of LLM-based vulnerability scanner, and are just ... scanning random sites, for ... reasons?

@VogueLaGalere @tuban_muzuru @cwebber So I mean even putting aside the others ... what does "controls" even mean? If I install an OS on a computer for somebody am I now legally responsible for ensuring that their computer knows their age? As the person with local admin am I legally responsible for ensuring my coworkers verify their ages properly with Windows? Is the university legally responsible since they licensed it?

It doesn't say anything good about our political process that despite BROAD widespread support for ending time changes, and there being no clear reason to continue doing time changes, we just ... keep doing time changes.

If we can't even summon the political will to stop doing the stupidest thing that benefits no one and harms everyone, and would be trivial (legally, anyway) to stop doing, how are we supposed to do things that actually matter a lot?
