@flomaraninchi sur le problème des usines à gaz : honnêtement depuis l'avènement du concept de « le-navigateur-est-le-système-dans-le-système », l'intérêt de beaucoup de gens pour la perf, la conso mémoire, etc., a fortement baissé.

@mjg59 I agree not all code is art, and often not even craft. But contrary to optimizing compilers, we're not yet at a point where the generated code only needs to be read/modified by a handful of optimization experts, as it is with ASM. The generated code isn't even reliably identical between 2 prompts. The AIGen'd code I've seen can be quite elegant taken in isolation, but looks a lot like a Frankenstein'd behemoth when I look at "large" (beyond toy project) code bases.

@veronica@explains.social honestly, all the well-known songs of ABBA are pop songs, and I think that's mostly why people think they're a pop-related band. Also, at the time they were performing you may be right that having women performers was also influencing things, but I'm not so sure. When I think of Queen for example, I think of a rock band playing b/w glam & hard rock, even though they actually had one "reggae-ish" album too. But one album doesn't mean they're a reggae band, if that makes sense.

@raymaccarthy I agree with the sentiment wrt IP theft (at least, insofar as, since proprietary code requires us to respect its license, the bare minimum would be to respect FLOSS licenses). If you take ethical concerns (including ecological ones) into consideration, I think there is no conversation left whatsoever. I took @mjg59's comments from a more technical point of view, no so much ethical in that sense.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online during my 2nd year of Master's, I had 5.5/20 (so… a D or E if we were in a 100-point scale?) in parallel architectures and programming. Contrary to Oz in Buffy, I don't test well. Anyway, My PhD was about performance measurement and optimization for nascent multicore architectures. 😁 You're 100% right, passion/dedication trumps rigid institutional structures (that being said, I *am* a professor who partially enforce them…).

@GreenWitch extrait When you write a new message, Thunderbird uses the default identity for the account you are working in. When you reply to a message, Thunderbird uses the identity that matches the address the message was originally sent to, if it can find a match in the account you are working in. Otherwise it uses the default identity. Set mailnews.reply_to_self_check_all_ident to true using the Config editor if you want it to check the identities for all accounts when replying.

@RosaCtrl perl. Always perl. Unless you only know sed/awk. But seriously, the moment you need more than regular automata-based pattern recognition, might as well use the sledgehammer. Also, I don't want to learn more than the 2-3 things I learned in awk. But my answer is absolutely made in good faith of course. 😬

@RosaCtrl But honestly, the borrowing mechanism in Rust can become far more complicated to grasp when combined with the lifetime mechanism than most of what I've seen in Perl. Perl is weakly and dynamically typed. It is a product of its time. But it is still a great language imo as long as you use the right pragmas to keep yourself honest. 2/2

@RosaCtrl now, from the other answers you gave, you said you wanted the "smallest" additional tool, so perl shouldn't even be an option then. It is a fully interpreted language, with bytecode and everything, after all.

Replying to
@RosaCtrl (as you can see I'm rather passionate about the topic because I think a lot of people trashtalk Perl without having tried to seriously write programs with it.) I do think that being weakly typed is a big drawback of Perl, because it enables your programs to "somewhat work" because you broke conventional rules of programming, but at the same time it can make it difficult to debug if you want to have reasonable QA.

@RosaCtrl I was indeed thinking of C++ while writing all this. 😁 Now to be fair, most Perl scripts fall into 2 categories: write-once, it-will-never-be-used-in-production-oh-my-god-what-have-I-done, and I-ve-been-burnt-too-many-times-I-ll-write-it-correctly-and-use-strict. 😬

@veronica@explains.social all that being said, I put some bands in the "hard-rock" category that some friends put in "rock" etc. Your assessment isn't invalid in the least,. obviously. :-) (As for frontwomen "making" a band not being a rock band, I'm really unsure this is the case nowadays, when considering all the women fronting bands going from pop to death-metal bands – but I'm pretty sure you were not implying this for contemporary bands, were you?)

@ck right. I was thinking more in terms of, within the same prompt requesting code generation, identical needs which should generate a single function called at different sites become several functions with slight variations (sometimes only in the function name) being generated, which happens far less often in large codebases tackling the same issue. @mjg59
