I casually post about PKM, privacy, software engineering, AI/LLMs, games, and books. Not an expert; just sharing my own eventually consistent opinions.

Telecom engineer by education (lasers! yes, really), software engineer by trade, systems architect by inclination. I somehow ended up spending my whole career in software, dealing with distributed systems, data platforms, and cloud-shaped problems.

The new Google Antigravity IDE app forces you to opt in to tracking and data training. The button remains disabled until the box is selected, though they claim you can opt out later in settings.

They force the opt-in knowing most people won't read it or bother to opt out. This is a dark UX pattern.

GitHub Copilot inline suggestions in VS Code count toward your quota for every displayed ghost text, regardless of accepting it or not. With the default setting triggering suggestions everywhere, you can easily exhaust your quota in a single day, even without actually "using" suggestions.

A better approach is to disable inline suggestions globally and assign a keybinding to trigger them manually when needed.

If “web search” to you is a page that shows a list of relevant web pages, here’s a friendly reminder: there are alternatives, and you don’t have to use “AI search.”

For example, there’s @kagihq@mastodon.social It’s a paid search engine I’ve been using since 2023. The biggest advantage for me is that the results are actually relevant and accurate. You can also upvote or downvote specific pages, and there are no ads.

I think something is wrong with how companies are advertising their roles as “remote” nowadays. A few examples:

“The role is remote, with the expectation of a transition to a hybrid office model.”

“This role is onsite. It’s posted as remote for visibility”

“This is a remote position (…) we require 15 days onsite a month.”

Job posted as remote from anywhere in the EU; recruiter: “We’re only hiring in contry X”

@simon Great episode! “The great misconception in AI is that using these tools effectively is easy” and “using coding agents well is taking every inch of my 25 years of experience as a software engineer” really resonated with me. It matches the sentiment of an essay I’ve been writing for some time and published today. Same experience! I think you'll like it. https://jsynowiec.github.io/posts/ai-should-raise-the-bar/

@simon Given how they're limiting usage, it might be better if they remove Cowork, Code, and access to Opus from Pro altogether. Or remove Pro entirely. What's the point when the Cowork onboarding in the app cannot even finish while using all the session quota? From 0 to 100% under 10 minutes, including paying for the Pro plan and installing the app. https://mastodon.online/@jaqbsy/116460268133218169

Blogged: Why as const beats enums for most TypeScript use cases. A surprisingly underused and less popular TypeScript feature.

You Might Not Need an Enum: Why Const Assertions Are the Better Default in TypeScript

New blog post. An observation on scope creep in the age of AI, and why infinite capacity might be the worst thing to happen to software.

I ran a small experiment to see if companies use AI to screen job submissions. They do, and not all disclose this or ask for consent.

While catching up with my RSS feed, I found out that @simon@fedi.simonwillison.net published a neat history of Claude system prompts, including fake git commits and all. I pointed my AI agent to that data and asked it to analyze how these system prompts have evolved over time.

GPT-5.5 in Codex, after working for over 10 minutes, applied a *robust* markdown separator and a regression test 🤣 I'm going to start calling \n a robust white-space only line separator.

Reposting from X: Pi is moving to earendil-works GitHub org and the published packages namespace is changing too. Switch your Pi agents. This is a breaking change an new versions do Pi plugins won’t work with newer Pi releases.

@simonbs@mastodon.social If you don’t mind me asking, where and how much are you spending on tokens? Are you using a fancy multi-model task-optimized PAYG setup, or just using some “Max” subscription?

@simonbs@mastodon.social If your employer wouldn’t be subsidizing tokens, what would you choose for personal work? I’m still trying to find the best option for me, and a regular Pro/Max subscription seems like the easiest but most expensive option. Unfortunately, I’m hitting weekly limits in just 2-3 days on Codex now.
