Don’t be fooled by this summer of AI hype "Describing them as “superintelligence” or “rogue models” ascribes agency to products rather than to the companies building them. Breathless claims about AGI and new capabilities fall apart pretty quickly under scrutiny.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run Oh yuck. It's getting so hard to hold back the ad hominems based on incel programmer stereotypes. — You guys, I made a girl come! — Is it a human, Kent? — ...she's Canadian, you probably don't know her.

@tante Yeah, I see people in the left who are quite happy to ignore that "AI" is literally trained without consent or compensation on generations' work... I don't care how many hammer and sickle memes they generate, they're still exploiting the labour of others. Same tools, there's just another master behind them.

Oh lookee here! The Holos app is available on F-droid now:

Is this the first fediverse app to run an actual activitypub server locally on your device?

Your regular reminder that when you begin a sentence with "I hate AI as much as the next person, but" — nothing before the "but" will matter.

Don't help Big Tech normalise "AI" usage more than they have already succeeded to. Move back the tentpoles and don't share the bullshit.

@dialecticalmusings I'm afraid I have no idea what the blog post, its author, or their book is 🤷 I replied to @tante's toot, that's all. At face value though, I'd say someone would have to deliberately misread Lorde to conclude she was "manifestly wrong". Maybe even doing so from a vested interest in keeping the Master's house intact. But I may be wading blindly into an academic hornet's nest.

If you have some margin left in your #BandcampFriday budget, here's a freshly released, 30 years old Fugazi album produced by the late, great Steve Albini. Yes, the famed "Albini sessions".

https://www.brooklynvegan.com/fugazi-release-albini-sessions-to-benefit-the-letters-charity/

The band is donating all its proceeds from sales to the Letters charity, and that share is at its prime on Bandcamp Fridays. Go, buy:

@ephemeral IIRC McLuhan talked about media as extensions of the human senses. The brain would be the exception that processes sensory stimuli? I should read up on McLuhan. The important technology (let's just embrace that term for now) of books would be to convey meaning. Over distances, over time. That is also close to one definition of culture, passing on knowledge to others. So in more than one sense, books are a technology underpinning culture as well.

And again, I wish for a #Fdroid client that lets the user setup free text filters. Local anti-features, if you will. Opening the official app, I would dearly like to not see the cryptocurrency (still! 🤢) and "AI" bullcrap that blinkered code kiddies are pumping out to keep the coal industry and far right agendas alive. Fuck 'em. But I don't see any f-droid front that allows users to filter out irrelevant (and in the above case, societally and environmentally detrimental) apps. #noAI

@ephemeral It's disconcerting to accept that technologies are latently violent, but... being invented and used by people, it only makes sense. On culture or technology — ¿por qué no los dos? 🙂 Consider how written language → printing → internet provides one (simplified) progression of cultural technologies that drastically changed the possible audience and the way they engage with/read text? I first wrote "consume text", but the commercial connotations may only dig this hole deeper yet…

@ephemeral The answer very much depends on the discipline or field you come from 🙂 Like books, I think of hard drives as media, extensions of our memories. But there's also an argument to be made that you or me reading a book is different than a hard drive being read by a computer, because reading triggers cognitive processes beyond scanning the verbatim text. So "book technology" could be an interface for human cognition?
