@stux@mstdn.social out of curiosity, what OS do you run? One of my machines is on Debian, and I’m looking for alternatives.

Added a kiwix server to my local server setup. It took… no time at all really. Probably one of the easiest things I’ve done in forever and it just worked.

Next up is either going to be Kavita or Immich - depends how I’m feeling after I take care of things that need to get done today.

@stux@mstdn.social Bluesky is speed running Twitter’s enshitification. I used Bluesky for about a week when I could first get an account and it seemed pretty clear what path they were going to do down. Haven’t signed back in ever since.

I’ve been using Mastodon for awhile, but never gave a proper #introduction. So here we go.

I’m a father of two boys. A former IT geek who ended up working in breweries, then becoming an actual brewer at a small pub. It eventually closed, and I transitioned to full time #stayathomedad . I play #hockey, I dabble with #Writing, I love #SciFi and #Fantasy, I #homebrewbeer, I’m a #youthhockey dad, and I’m trying to get back in to #ttrpg. I currently have 3 #Cats. That’s a snapshot of my life.

@dedicto@zeroes.ca I’ve been using Kagi for about a year or so now. I use it in all my devices and it has been an excellent experience. I was skeptical about paying for search, but it didn’t take more than a couple weeks for me to decide I was never going back. As was said by others, I wish you could excise every last bit of AI from it; but what you can’t turn off is pretty easy to ignore.

@benjaoming I remember the uproar when Apple put a U2 album on everyone’s iPod without consent. This Chrome thing.. I mean I just don’t even have the words anymore. I remember when I used to love technology.

New WiFi module that actually plays nice with #Linux installed in old laptop. Was getting tired of it capping at around 30/30. Now with a module that plays nice the laptop is getting about 750/750.

@OrionKidder@mas.to @Kristofferabild@hachyderm.io yeah, I mostly use Apple Maps because a lot of the open maps or other competitors are just lacking a lot of quality of life features. Doesn’t mean I won’t be pushed to use them by an ad bloated Apple Maps (one of the reason I left Google world long ago). Here WeGo has been a pretty decent one for navigation. I’ve also been playing with CoMaps, but I don’t like that it doesn’t offer alternative routes when I set a destination.

@OrionKidder@mas.to @Kristofferabild@hachyderm.io I was already testing out some different map alternatives just to see what was out there. I might have to seriously dig in to my options now and long term test a few to see if I can live with them.

@Impossible_PhD purchased my ebook copy earlier today. Looking forward to reading as soon as I finish up with the book I’m in the middle of. Good thing I’m rolling in to a long weekend!

Just sitting in a parking lot for the next hour and a half while my kid is in the rink for #hockey tryouts. Yup, tryouts for next season. When the hockey season is over, the hockey season is not over.

At least after today it’s back to lacrosse for him and won’t have to think about hockey for a little while.

Brew day! Taking advantage of some nice weather and a quiet day at home to brew a nice stout.

@benfry@information.garden I used Word 5.1a on the Mac for ages, long past its end of life. Still probably the best word processor of the gui era.

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca that’s frightening. Our skies here in the middle of NY have been a dull orange all day. That video however, even without the flames, is something I could happily go my whole life without experiencing (though with the way things are heading these days, I am increasingly worried I might one day experience it first hand).

@stux@mstdn.social replace “any” with “every”. At this point they are a requirement as far as I’m concerned. Also trying out using privacy focused DNS servers. And self-host the things that are in my means/ability.
