@alyeska part of why I didn't try to get an X was that I didn't want even more unwanted attention when traveling to the US, but now going there would be a bad idea anyway. I don't really care about what's in my documents anymore, as long as it never gets changed to M. The name I get called most often is different from my legal name, which is different from my previous legal name. Identity is more fluid than documents can ever be, and it's not as if showing my passport would stop anyone misgendering me. Maybe if enough people had an X it would help convince organizations to address them with nonbinary words. Personally I don't even want that anymore, because I feel nonbinary gets misunderstood by cis people as a single gender that gets policed even more than woman. Instead of giving freedom from boxes, an X would place me in an even smaller box. All that said, if you have the money, do what feels right. Being a bit happier for the rest of your life is worth a lot.

Show me someone who is considered wise, and I'll show you someone who has fucked up in more ways than average and was willing to learn.

I'm reading about self-determination theory, and it fits with the way my life has been improving recently.

I had no sense of belonging anywhere, and apparently that will kill my feelings of autonomy and competence. Starting to find the right people on fedi has helped.

Of course there's also other things going on. It's the end of the dark season. Progesterone is great for my emotions AND my body is finally changing again, away from causing dysphoria.

Maybe it's because I found good neighbors, maybe it's because I embraced being weird, probably a bit of both, but I noticed it has been a long while since anyone was pushy with wrong assumptions.

Common past assumptions have been that I needed a dom (when actually my dominant vibes disappear because of depression), and that I needed just a tiny bit more advice to become a Western Buddhist too (I'm something with different goals, and have a chip on my shoulder about mindfulness).

It seems people assume others are either in need of their guidance or potential guides. Which brings us to the other side of this post:

Don't be intimidated if you don't understand something I'm talking about. I'm playful, and sometimes vague on purpose, but not necessarily smart or right.

We can all treat each other as equals without needing to be trying to do the same things. I think it's beautiful when community works that way.

@WataruTenkawa_1 for me, travel gives a sense of freedom I need to make any experience truly great. Travel also leads to great food and drink. Travel has been necessary the times I fell deeply in love, and those led to great sex. This way three other great experiences add to the greatness of travel! It's possible career success and becoming a parent are greater still, but I wouldn't know.

Here's something I only just figured out how to explain about myself: I'm happiest when I'm confidently pursuing something I want. This seems like a personality trait, so what I can say about it may be helpful to others.

To be clear, "something" doesn't have to be physical, it could for example be knowledge, or attention from an interesting person.

I don't mean flow state. Flow is great but not the point here. I also don't mean anticipation.

There's a lot of advice being given out there that includes "try to want less". To me, that's unhelpful at best.

When someone gives me something I want as a reward for doing what they want, it doesn't make me happy. It annoys me instead.

When, with a lot of effort, I get something I want even though I didn't think I could make it happen, I feel almost nothing.

When I do nothing for it, and get it anyway, I don't really care. It's difficult to make me happy with gifts unless they're tools or I really like you.

When I think there's a decent chance I can get what I want, doing the work it takes is pure joy. And then what's normally considered the reward is good too, in a "that was nice!" way.

I used to think this feeling was part of romance only. Life's much easier understanding that's not true.

What should I call this? "The joy of pursuit"?

@andnull@social.nouveau.community yes, Frisian was suppressed here. Now it's an official language for part of the Netherlands, but I don't live there so I don't have anyone to speak with. My mother's parents died young, which limited what she could learn. As an adult I asked her about pronunciation of some of what reached me and I think at that time I remembered more than she did. Loss of a language continues long after suppression stops simply because there is less practical use for it. I think it's worth it to try to rejoin the group of people who speak it, if at all possible. Thoughts and feelings about what to do next are more likely to lead to happiness than regrets and anger about the past.

@andnull@social.nouveau.community the people you could connect with not being nice certainly is a problem for immersive learning. You don't owe anything to a language, or to mean people. For me, trying to return is similar to all the other ways I refuse to conform. By the way, two important character in the fiction I'm writing happen to have a Filipino parent. I want to be clear that that wasn't why I followed you. I do have a lot to learn about a few cultures if I'm going to write any of this well enough. I mean to write for people, not about them without them.

@andnull@social.nouveau.community interesting, I thought I don't speak "my" language because the generations before me didn't teach their children enough of it. I've felt bad for half forgetting the few words and phrases my mother used back when I was a kid and didn't understand their origin. Such forgetting must have happened to her too, and to many others.

@falcennial @WataruTenkawa_1 I think more travel would have given me some career opportunities! I agree kids are difficult to combine with travel, but that wasn't the problem. It's just a lot more difficult to create them in a queer relationship.

@MostlyBlindGamer thumb, but four is the other four fingers extended and then I move my thumb again for five. I've been told that's strange. I count multiples of six on the other hand, so using only my fingers I can count up to 35 instead of 10.

@rally thank you! I have a chunk of story that started as a fever dream, and another chunk that goes before it that makes a much better beginning. I'll avoid adding much after until it starts feeling like a deadline approaching.

@rally that organic process of exploring what characters think and do feels a lot like playing with fractal zooming software. There's always more, and many pretty surprises.

@kate I don't know if it's a problem that exists over there, but whitish beach rocks that look like worn down human made stuff are danger pebbles. If it catches fire when it dries, that's white phosphorus. If it doesn't, I don't know.
