One tidbit of knowledge from today's #mindtrek conference in Tampere, Finland from Pauline Bessoles: #xwiki has a migration tool to ease migration from #atlassian #confluence:

@digitaalinenitsenaisyys@mementomori.social onneksi Euroopassa on tarjolla kohtuullisesti vaihtoehtoja mm. jenkkien pilvipalveluilla.

There are some small PC manufacturers that only build Linux PCs. Perhaps the oldest and most well-known is U.S.-based System 76. In Europe there is Tuxedo (Germany), Star Labs (UK) and Slimbook (Spain) that all provide "Linux first" computers. 12/21 #linux #system76 #tuxedo #starlabs #slimbook

Many used to be locked in to Windows because of its large application catalog. Now there are good (enough) open source application for most use cases and commercial software often runs on Linux as well. Many can now run non-Windows operating systems and survive. 10/21 #windows #opensource #linux

Vendor lock-in is one major reason why #digitalsovereignty is hard. Here's a pretty good overview of what vendor lock-in means:

https://blog.radwebhosting.com/understanding-vendor-lock-in/

For some reason the article does not mention #opensource, which helps avoid vendor lock-in. For example, if you use SaaS application that is open source, you can easily switch to self hosting if needed.

Lenovo's Historic Shift to Linux as Default OS Challenges Microsoft's Windows Dominance

Lenovo announces a groundbreaking move to make Linux the default operating system on 60% of its consumer laptops starting in 2025, marking a major shift away from Windows. This decision is driven by cost savings, reduced support issues, and better customer satisfaction with Linux. Other PC manufacturers are coordinating similar moves, signaling a significant industry transformation away from Windows.
