I'm stuck in the southeast US and typically have to turn on my AC once or twice even in January so my apartment doesn't approach 80 F / 27 C during the warm fronts. In the hotter half of the year, it would threaten the health of both me and my cat, so that's a total non-starter; it's 87 F / 30 C and sunny outside as I type this, and being on the top floor with tech devices running means it would be 90+ inside without AC.
At least I'm not still in Florida where it was the norm at all times. I actually get to experience seasons now.
Good on her. We need to restore public funding in the long term, but I'm sure this helps immensely as a stopgap.

Okay, the more I think about it, correction: we lost power for a *total* of 2 hours and 1 minute. My only indication of this is household appliances' clocks vs the real time, which doesn't actually say anything about whether the outage was one time or cumulative. I doubt this consumer-grade unit could keep it going for that long in one stretch. Still awesome.

Almost immediately after getting rid of the annual invasion of black sugar ants in the apartment, the third different species in two years has taken over my car. And apparently everyone else around here is suffering too, because the closest store was completely out of all ant baits of any kind by any brand.
It's not a very Buddhist thing of me to say, but right now, I want to burn these fuckers in hellfire. What is much less problematic to say is that I fucking DESPISE summer for this and a hundred other reasons and can't believe it's still early August.

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz Even if you paid them to do it, many wouldn't. I think this severely underestimates the mental health impact of two weeks secluded for a lot of extroverted people. The covid lockdowns were truly miserable for them and seriously detrimental to their well-being. I still don't oppose the measures in that circumstance; that was an emergency. But it's one thing to implement lockdowns in the face of the biggest pandemic in 100 years, and it's quite another to try to do it every year (even for "only" two weeks) for preventative measures that aren't salient to people trying to live their daily lives.
You would have to get mass acceptance or try to force it on everyone by law. The former won't ever happen, and the latter would be authoritarian and probably lead to mass disobedience at best or riots at worst. And the whole thing is useless if it's not universal. So either way, it would never work in practice.
