There must be some law I am unaware of that all vintage/retro PC equipment purchased on eBay must smell like tobacco products. Doesn't matter if it's completely empty, still stinks. Yuck.
So, I boosted two things earlier and I wanted to add some thoughts. These toots brought into focus a lot of the feelings I've had of recent: modern computers are too hard. Have you tried to write Vulkan code? It's insane, how is anyone supposed to understand that. The frameworks have abstracted us into complete unknowing, and now LLMs are here to save us. No, I don't agree. We need to re-think a lot of these abstractions and simplify, esp. in OSS. @xgranade@wandering.shop @mhoye@cosocial.ca
People keep saying variants of "One this is for sure, GenAI is here to stay" and those of us with short term memories will say they said same thing about NFTs. But I, as an Elder Millennial, would like to invoke the old texts and remind you they said the same things about Java Web Applets, Shockwave Flash, and most importantly Flooz.
Was dbrand's limited edition "touch grass" series silly? Undoubtedly. Is it also incredibly awesome? Yes.
Guess I'm only showing off Ubuntu and Fedora on the stream tonight then :(
Everyone loves to dogpile on systemd, but dracut is my nemesis. Is it nice that it's small? Yes. Does it make WAY TOO MANY ASSUMPTIONS? Also yes. I know the default filesystem of Ubuntu is ext4, but why won't you let me boot to an xfs filesystem I setup with debootstrap? Because some magic in dracut enforces the filesystem type, despite me overriding it in the config. So frustrating.
