UK-based GM and occasional roleplayer, #DnD / #CandelaObscura / #Witcher / #Shadowdark

Mediocre at #Parkrun and other #running since 2019, Critical-Role-catcher-upper, possible dice goblin. Technically a cyborg, but not in an exciting way.

Occasionally plays #videogames when the kids let me near the TV.

A new day, a new parkrun, a new...ark? Newark #parkrun this morning , doing a bit of tourism. Friendly course, mix of tarmac (yay) and bark chipping paths (boo). Knocked two minutes off last week's time at my home event, I think at least in part due to the cooler weather. Today's time was 31:27 and I bagged an 'N' for the alphabet challenge. Only six letters to go, but one of them is a 'Q'... #running #runnersOfMastodon

Another weekend, another #parkrun - Rising Sun this week, just outside Newcastle.

Really liked this one, extremely friendly and mostly flat over country and woodland trails. Would definitely do this one again if the opportunity came up :)

Out for a bank holiday Monday run, along Rivelin Valley and back. That's it for a few days though, maybe see if I can get out to Oughtibridge again on Wednesday but I'm going to take it easy until then.

There's a page on the #parkrun website with more information at #parkwalk at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/parkwalk/ Mrs C suffers with chronic pain and fatigue and walks parkrun with sticks. The volunteers have *always* been really lovely, both at our local event and when we've been traveling :)

Almost slept in this morning! Woke up at 7.30 and then drove down to South Shields to meet friends for the #parkrun - made it around in 31:24 despite a strong headwind for the last kilometre and a half. Now for breakfast :) #running #runnersOfMastodon

Had a good #parkrun this morning, despite it feeling warm and muggy. Official time of 32:13 which is almost exactly what I got on my watch. Surprised myself on the run - my cadence (steps per minute) was up near 200 for a lot of the run (training paying off) and pace caught me out too. A couple of times I hit 4 minutes something per km without realising, and actually hit 3:48/km during the last 400m. Kept overheating though, which forced me to slow down at times. #running #runnersOfMastodon

Went out for a run at lunchtime because it was supposed to be clouding over and raining this afternoon and I wanted to beat the weather.

It's warm out there. Sheesh!

Also something I'd like to clarify - when I'm out running with headphones on I put them on the "ambient" setting so outside noise gets fed through alongside the music - so I can still pay attention to what's going on around me, because I am a responsible chap.

I've made some really good progress this year - I'd been losing fitness and had got heavier and most of my 5k times had been between 36-38 minutes until recently. Improvements seem to be slowing down but I'm fine with that, it takes as long as it takes and I don't want to rush things. I would *love* to get a sub-30 time this year, but we'll have to see how things go.

@deinol@dice.camp I last played AD&D in the early 90s, so not quite as long ago as you're asking but still a heck of a long time ago - I cannot honestly remember how (if?) we handled initiative. I can barely remember how THAC0 worked. Frankly I feel like that's probably a good thing :)

Did a "magic half mile" on the #garmin #running training yesterday. Road running on the edge of town. Out for 15 minutes, 4 intervals of cadence training, a "magic half mile" where you're supposed to push yourself but not sprint, and then a ten minute cool-down.

The magic part was 800m at 5:17/km (I don't do miles, at least for running). That was hard, but pleased I kept it up without stopping or slowing down - was definitely struggling at the end though!

Rest day today.

I found a photo in this week's parkrun facebook upload - I've somehow managed to not look half dead through I'm definitely struggling a bit. I can live with that :)

@piglet@mastodon.scot I can absolutely relate to that. School PE lessons in the 80s and 90s put me off exercise and sport for years and that took a long time to unlearn.

@trib@aus.social that's a great list, pretty much everything I'm familiar with on there is *gold* and anything I don't recognise should probably go on my to read/play/watch list. On the videogame front, I loved the Horizon games and am currently working my way through The Last of Us (boy, am I late to *that* party). For my own home games I've also lifted a lot from the recent Zelda games (breath of the wild / tears of the kingdom) and Witcher 3. I love a big open-world game :)

@danielholt@mstdn.games I should probably leave it at that, but your post left me with some questions - is it that you've been running/jogging for a while, and the knee has got worse since you started a more physical job? Or are you new to running and trying to get a sense of how your body should react to things?

One of my favourite DM tools at the #ttrpg table is a cheap set of kid's egg timers that I can use any time we need to ratchet up the tension or focus on a time-critical task. Often it isn't an all-or-nothing pass or fail, sometimes I like to escalate the situation with each turn of the timer.

I ordered these online for just over a fiver, but they're worth their weight in gold. My players may disagree, of course ;)

@Zumbador during last weekend's session our party's paladin was channeling an ancient avatar of Ioun so that the party could ask it questions. Sustaining the connection was mentally and physically exhausting for the paladin character. Every five minutes, using the green timer, the paladin had to succeed a constitution saving throw or take a level of exhaustion. Really focused attention at the table, and made them worry over how far they could push their luck.

@sammy exactly the sort of situation I'm thinking of - while the players might feel like they can take their time to come up with a super optimal solution, their characters are under pressure and sometimes they need to make a quick decision!

@Zumbador oh, absolutely - that's the whole point :) I'll pop one in the middle of the table right in front of them. Sometimes I'll explain what's going on if it's a timed challenge, other times I won't explain exactly what's happening but they'll know that *something* is about to happen.

Whoops, I accidentally entered this year's #percypud 10k run... First my finger slipped onto a link, then I completely unintentionally waited for just over an hour in a queue, and then somehow I unwittingly filled in an application form and paid the entry fee. By mistake. Silly me. #running #runnersOfMastodon

@danielholt@mstdn.games I am not in any way qualified to offer health or run coaching advice on here but you described your knee as getting "very sore" which is concerning. I would definitely suggest talking to a doctor in case there's any underlying issues that need dealing with. You seem to be UK based so hopefully that shouldn't be difficult to do. Best of luck to you!
