#Rstats life-changing but abominable hack of the day:

system2("open", ".")

(Replace xdg-open for open if you're on Linux instead of a Mac. This is more useful to the Vim + REPL set than RStudio users. Not guaranteed to actually change your life.)

Edit: thanks @bastistician@fosstodon.org for pointing out that browseURL(".") does the same thing (and probably works on Windows—IDK and fortunately have no way to check).

I finally published a post about my feelings about AI today: https://www.eamoncaddigan.net/posts/ai-in-2026/ I've been blocked for months, trying to figure out a tone and framing that I feel good about sharing publicly. To be honest I'm kinda proud of this one, but even if nobody cares it feels so good to just get these thoughts out of my head.

What programming languages are cool? I'm not asking which ones are good, or useful. Or even which is your favorite (unless you like cool things—not everybody does and that's fine).

I'll try to put this succinctly: when you participate in a system that does harm, you bear some responsibility for that harm. Yes, "it's complicated"—we are all compelled to participate in various harmful systems even if we'd rather not, and the people who derive the most benefit or exert the most control over these systems are most responsible for their harms. But when you opt in to a harm-machine that nobody is forcing you to use, you're disgracing yourself. And the system that created all of the actual existing LLMs that people are using is a tremendous harm-machine.

If you're in a position to choose between saying "thanks" and saying "sorry", express thankfulness every time.

Can anyone recommend a good LoRa device to use with #Meshtastic if I want to buy, like 10 of them (to give to friends, use at events, keep in my car "just in case")?

I guess now that the tarrifs are struck down it's a good time to move on this.

The thing about fixing an intermittent issue with a computer—or really any sort of machine—is... Did You?

Anyway let me take a break from complaining about complexity. I dug into the Willow protocol a bit after seeing the terrific video from @gwil@post.lurk.org: https://worm-blossom.org/#y2026w6

The protocol seems... pretty simple for what it does? This is not a complaint! Maybe I'm overestimating my understanding but the data model feels straightforward and the things you can do with it are powerful.

There IS great stuff going on in software these days but you have to know where to look.

Also, I don't like the way Outlook and Thunderbird integrate calendaring with email. I want different apps to do different things! Yes I understand that calendar coordination is carried out by sending ics files over email, but calendars can still be standalone applications.

You might think you know where I'm going with this, but surprise! I actually think most of the blame lies with the widespread adoption of CI/CD pipelines, and the manner in which this programming philosophy has trickled down to non-website programming. E.g., every program that tells you to pipe curl output to bash or updates itself (rather than depend on a package manager or manually downloaded installers). Making it easier to fix bugs in production has resulted in more bugs in production!

@lzg@mastodon.social Are we not low-key judging people who participate enthusiastically in fast fashion—and getting into mending our own clothes and thrifting harder?

@ansate I apologize if I'm doing the thing where you're looking for a personal recommendation and not a search tool, but this search tool might be a little obscure and I happen to know about it (through work, at a job I only have because you boosted a toot from @amelialiarakos, fwiw): https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/

@magsol I was already riffing on this but a CI/CD pipelines is the very definition of a tightly coupled complex system. The internet of Vint Cerf (et al.) is complex but loosely coupled. Today's internet—not so much. But again, it's not just the internet or the web. Regular programs feel flakier than they did a while ago. And of course now we have all these "edge devices" laying around everywhere, ready to break.

@pkw Yeah I feel like you get me! Digital calendars are associated with business because they're fundamentally collaborative, but regular people can collaborate across borders too, and probably should do so more often. I believe that the rest of the world starts the week on Monday, and this seems simple enough to accommodate. With week numbering systems, it does seem obvious that Saturday and the following Sunday are the "same weekend", so they should have the same week number IMHO. Tangentially related: I wish calendar GUIs had a "four weeks view" with the current week at the top and the following weeks below it. This would be loads more useful to me than a month view ever is.

@ljwrites@writeout.ink I'm expecting a lean few years, but yeah. If our civilization somehow manages to avoid collapse induced by reaching 3+ degrees of warming (no small if, since DEMAND FOR COAL POWER IS RISING), I bet my ability to Do Computers will be pretty sought after indeed.

@Burn_this_ Haha I hope you use it providently. For me, saying "thanks" is a more vulnerable act than apologizing. So many (but not all) apologies are secret requests for absolution. Sometimes apologizing is a selfish act, more about the person apologizing than the one they wronged. But thanking somebody tells them: "you're great, and I appreciate it". Who doesn't love hearing that? So thanks for the fun reply and for getting to the end of this tedious, over-serious reply.

@krono Ah that's a good argument! Although I guess I can have my cake (a lovely symmetrical calendar hanging from the wall with pictures of goats in trees) and eat it too (a calendar app lacks the cute pics but keeps the weekend "together" when I'm making plans with people).
