I just realised this morning that the climate crisis doesn't affect billionaires because they can afford to live wherever they want and get the food they want to eat whenever they want shipped directly from wherever that can still produce them. They don't have incentive to change anything - rather they don't want things to change coz that would potentially hurt their income. What bothers me is that so many of us that will be affected are convinced by billionaires.

@galaxy_map@mastodon.social Some funding schemes interpret "AI" very broadly and fund Bayesian projects. I have a PhD student starting in Sept focusing mostly on Bayesian phylogenetics and modelling (with a bit of machine learning classification) under such a scheme.
It's very strange how covid exposed a lot of things - like how governments could just spend without having the money, or how that money then flows to the wealthiest in society, or how work (and life) can slow down but won't collapse society - but we seem to have chosen to have not seen all that and gone back to the way it was and then turning the dial to 11...
This is ridiculous.

Science has to be reproducible so needs to be open and transparent but commercialisation often prohibits that…
I can easily name someone who's been showing "micro aggression" towards and bias against me over many years, but I won't be able to convincingly give you a solid concrete example of what exactly they've done. Such is the nature of micro aggression and that is why it's called micro aggression.

When you try to “educate” people on micro aggressions, unconscious biases and casual racism, one of the most common responses you get is, “Why do you perceive those things as being bad?”, suggesting that it’s a problem with the people receiving micro aggression rather than with those doing the micro aggressions.
Another common response is that micro aggression is a misnomer and that it’s not aggression.
Well it is. They just don’t get it coz they’ve never experienced it.

SVPCA is not extinct. After a year off in 2025 and a period of silence, organisers of recent SVPCA have met with other interested parties to discuss future symposia, including provisional plans for a meeting in late August or early September 2026. More details to follow very soon.

FSS - I hate voice command like Alexa...Why does everyone love voice command so much? I tried to set two timers by "Alexa, set two timers, 30 min and 40 min" but Alexa set one timer at 1 hour and 10 min. It took forever to cancel that one because I couldn't quite articulate "one hour and ten minutes".

@rmounce It's a good way to teach Bayesian stats to adults (with some proficiency with maths already), unfortunately not to toddlers... Not sure "outpredicting by a factor of 6/2 = 3" is something a typical toddler will understand, let alone a typical anyone really...
My 8yo is pretty good at math for his age, but he was struggling with figuring out the chances of choosing the ace of spades from a full deck of cards.
