@sillyCoelophysis @sinbad You should only roll dice when the outcome is uncertain and the success or failure is interesting in some way. If there are no consequences to failure then it doesn’t matter what the outcome of the roll is. So, I think, no- a miss can’t just be a miss. There should have been something riding on that throw! Maybe you were trying to knock them down before they escaped. Maybe they were threatening you. Whatever those stakes were, *that* is what should happen.

@anildash@me.dm yes agreed! “Please make me rules that do this…” “does this look like what you want?” Etc

@anildash@me.dm I know that you already know to reserve some of the frustration for the world that leaves people desperate to just tell the computer what they want to happen in plain language without clicking through rules wizards and whatnot…. The illusion is so compelling…

@wingo@mastodon.social I enjoyed the details of the post but REALLY appreciated the coda. Thank you for writing this!

@ifixcoinops@retro.social this is very good, thank you! You are good and virtuous, as you have always hoped you were. Unrelated, but a little related… both of the RSS feeds that I can find from https://danfixes.blog/start seem a little strange. One only has two things in it, and the other has many things but they all link to, like, diffs of edits you’ve made….

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net I think a treatment like that would have be nice complement to e.g. Jimmy Maher’s detailed history of the development. (As somebody else wrote- there’s a tendency to want to talk about all of the Ultimas, to put it in context, or even all of Origin, to understand the market pressures that made it what it was. But so many people have hit those notes, and hit them well! You can stay away from them.)

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net I love Ultima 7 (and SI) so much and I would read the heck out of it. I would love a game engine black book on it/them.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca …. I finally get it! This is great!

I don’t know why I felt like yelling. 😞

Somehow this MOD player has turned into a bytecode interpreter. 😞

OK but I am irrationally pleased by the design of this little VM. It has predicated instructions!

@andybaio Thank you very much for posting this
