Something is very wrong when it feels refreshing to enter the appartment, which has 29°, because outside it has 40°.

I'm currently spending my time as a father of 2 grown-up sons, Perl hacker who is not afraid to touch other tech (mostly Postgres and vue), sort-of DJ, bicyclist, cook, taker-of-pictures.
Today I learned about `ncdu -x /`, which will show the disk usage on '/', but excludes dirs mounted on other file systems.
Today I braincoded some short SQL fixup while letting the LLM also generate a fix. The LLM was a tiny bit faster (I'd guess it took 60sec vs 90sec on my side), but I liked my solution more. I used a CTE to generate the fixed data and then did an update on select, while the LLM used a subselect.
Favourite quote from https://curtispoe.org/articles/watching-claude-sonnet-outperform-opus: "This is AI, after all. Read the code. If you don’t, “human in the loop” becomes “human in the noose.”"
A rather short report on what I did during the #Perl Toolchain Summit https://domm.plix.at/perl/2026_04_perl_toolchain_summit.html

Today I finally submitted two talks to the German #Perl Workshop in Berlin https://act.yapc.eu/gpw2026/

Today we had 4 border checks (depart from Senegal, enter Gambia, cross the Gambia river on the ferry, exit Gambia and enter Senegal) and had to deal with two foreign currencys (at least one payment for the "transit visa" when entering Gambia felt a bit shady). A big "THANK YOU" to the EU as we don't have to suffer through this when travelling in Europe!
Weil immer noch Grillverbot herrscht, gibt es dieses Jahr statt dem KAMEL-Grillen ein KAMEL-Picknick: https://vienna.pm.org/kamelgrillen.html
Today I spend nearly 13 hours and ~1600km on two trains to get from Berlin via Strasbourg to Marseille. It worked like a charm, was rather comfortable (due to me sitting in first class) and not that expensive (212€).

Live Demo from German Perl Workshop, what could possible go wrong?
Today I had to reimport some data because the online spreadsheet that the data was entered in interpreted a URL ending with a UUID as a number and increased the value in each row (if the UUID happend to end with a digit and the human operator "dragged" the rows down to copy the values). Thanks for nothing, "smart spreadsheet". Please stay dumb and don't fiddle with my data!

Today we had our family birthday party for the not so small number of relatives having their birthday in february. My mother made me a box containing one small present for each of my years, each with a picture of me at the respective age. Very beautiful present!
Today I also finished setup of my travel laptop (an old Lenovo Yoga) for our three week journey to Senegal, which starts tomorrow.
Today I learned how to set up Sway / Wayland with an projector in clone mode for giving a presentation using `wl-mirror` and `wl-present`. This post helped a lot: https://tedn.life/2025/03/09/ubuntu-wayland-sway-just-mirror-the-screen/ . Also better to test/learn this now then right before my upcoming talk at the German Perl Workshop: https://act.yapc.eu/gpw2026/talk/8035
Today I brought down a website by missing a comma in a config file (I thought it was just bash-like env var list, but in fact it was javascript...)
#potd Fat Freddy's Drop @ Arena, open air, family outing; great gig playing Based On A True Story (and some more, including a Happy-Birthday-Interlude); RIP DJ MU aka Fitchie https://domm.plix.at/potd/2026-06-18.html
Today I learned how to pause a systemd timer: First stop it, then schedule a "throwaway" unit to start the timer again:
systemctl --user stop some.timer
systemd-run --user --on-active=3h --unit=resume-timer systemctl --user start some.timer
Today Vienna felt like Beihai (which is the hottest place I've ever travelled to).
