@albertojavier@universeodon.com @ahltorp@mastodon.nu @rrustema020@mastodon.nl The irony about this, is things like transit buses, which are heavier than a pick-up and well into the territory of needing a CDL, typically have great forward visibility because they have huge windshields and are typically of a rear-engine layout so there's no engine taking up space up front; their front-ends are basically nothing but windshield. Also, they're typically lower to the ground for easy entry of passengers. Pick-ups and SUVs at stock height, let alone lifted to crazy heights like is shown in that GIF, generally have terrible forward visibility meanwhile because the front-end hogs most of it up.

@albertojavier@universeodon.com @ahltorp@mastodon.nu @rrustema020@mastodon.nl The automakers themselves actually selling high-performance trims of their pick-ups; the Syclone and 454SS from GM, the Ram SRT-10 from Dodge, and the F-150 Lightning from Ford, for a while in the '90s and '00s, certainly didn't help matters. If anything, it can be argued that the Syclone, 454SS, Ram SRT-10, and the first and second-gen Lightning collectively sparked the current sport truck trend decades ago, and we're still riding on a trend that dates back to 1990. (although the Syclone outsprinting the latest Ferrari at the time it launched definitely helped sell that sport truck given it was a 'Car & Driver' cover story back then) And the 'SUVs as a family hauler' trend traces its roots back to '91 when the first-generation Explorer launched, while prior to that point, minivans were the hot ticket family hauler, we've been putting up with SUVs as family haulers for 35 years keeping that in mind.

In the US, you can get away with up to 26k lbs GVWR on a normal license while 26,001 lbs GVWR and heavier needs a CDL. In truck classification terms, class-6 (19,501-26k lbs GVWR) is the heaviest class you can get away with on a normal license in the US, while class-7 (26,001-33k lbs GVWR) and class-8 (33,001+ lbs GVWR) need a CDL.

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @albertojavier@universeodon.com @rrustema020@mastodon.nl Moving house isn't exactly a commercial purpose if you're doing it yourself, ditto for carrying bags of sand or cement or whatever for some backyard renovations, although admittedly you don't even really need a medium-duty rig (class-3 through 6; GVWRs ranging between 10,001 and 26k lbs in the US) for doing that generally, and can in most cases get away with something truly light-duty (class-1 and 2; GVWRs ranging up to 10k lbs in the US) for those types of applications.

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @albertojavier@universeodon.com @rrustema020@mastodon.nl Commercial trucks with a GVWR above 26k lbs generally *do* have speed limiters, though, because high speeds at the weights that semis typically carry, for example (semis are 80k lbs GVWR typically) would be *absolutely* catastrophic in a crash, and also, at least in the US although I assume licensing is similar elsewhere too, anything with a GVWR above 26k lbs needs a CDL to drive. (the fact that an average Joe can legally drive something with a GVWR one or two pounds shy of needing a CDL is scary in itself, for instance, the max GVWR allowed on a normal license in the US is 26k lbs, and 26,001lbs and higher triggers CDL requirements; anyone could go out right now and rent a U-haul that's only two pounds shy of needing a CDL, at 25,999 lbs GVWR, just to move house, that's legitimately kinda frightening)

So, I just thought of something regarding klinkers: Couldn't they be painted by local kids and used in an art installation similar to how bricks for buildings are painted for that purpose in other parts of the world, eg. in an entry way for a school like how art walls are made with normal bricks painted by kids for that purpose?

@albertojavier@universeodon.com @ahltorp@mastodon.nu @rrustema020@mastodon.nl The Syclone had a turbo 4.3 V6 which had been built internally to handle boost and also used a custom intake, and it had a modified torque converter, and it used the AWD transfer case from the Astro/Safari vans. The suspension was also lowered vs. the stock S15 IIRC. The 454SS meanwhile, took the 454 big block out of Chevy's 2500 and 3500 pick-up range at the time, and stuck it in a regular-cab 1500 chassis, and turned it into something that was fast in a straight line, as sticking a big engine with a lot of power in a relatively small, light chassis, is going to lead to something like that. Dodge did basically the same thing for the Ram 1500 in the Ram SRT-10, but with the Viper engine and drivetrain.
