@ClintonAnderson@universeodon.com @someguy@beige.party @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green In the UK more land is used for golf courses than allotments. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening) Extra bad because theres huge waiting lists for allotments in most cities and local authorities are supposed to provide enough to cover demand, but city councils pretty much never do this. Golf course water use is huge. They can carry on putting huge amounts of water on their courses when households are banned from using hosepipes to water their plants due to low levels in reservoirs.

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social My understanding is that the government doesnt create money through spending. Its spending is funded via collecting taxes or by borrowing (via sale of government bonds which after a fixed term are repaid with interests - also should probably include finance made available via private public partnerships, although they are not very transparent and intentionally designed to keep the financing off government balance sheets). Banks are where money creation happens, which used to be constrained by fractional reserve requirements, which were effectively scrapped here in the UK and elsewhere.

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social I think Land Value Tax is interesting as its not possible to hide land or send it off-shore to avoid tax Also bringing capital gains equal to income tax should help and close a route used to wiggle into low taxes Wealth tax, windfall taxes when some sector suddenly makes amazing profits (particularly when lots of people are suffering due to the same factors - eg. energy prices due to the wars in Ukraine and Iran) Many things governments do without much transparency which shifts wealth to the rich (eg. those wars (energy prices + huge spending on military hardware) Thing that amazes me is that the whole money/market system is entirely constructed in our heads. We can change any of it. Could even change all of it. Likely due to the level of control the wealthy have over media & government the breadth of debate is limited Improving democracy is a good path. Recent stuff in Taiwan often mooted, but theres much more - Citizens Assemblies, Participatory Budgeting etc. cont/

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social I also like the path of building democratic projects, organisations, companies etc. Gives a space for people to get experience and develop the skills, and temperament, needed to function in a truly democratic society. Its also building parts of that society. Allows for experimenting with new, possibly better, ways to do democracy. The technologies we have now and our ever increasing understandings make all kinds of things possible!

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social I remember, shortly after the 2008 financial crisis, many progressive economists screaming about the ridiculousness of considering the finance of countries to be similar to households and implementing austerity. Yet here we are with massively degraded public services and many local authorities teetering on bankruptcy. The path taken after the financial crisis was ideological and sadly, due to the continued capture of government by the wealthy, that path massively favoured the wealthy. Quantitative Easing and a very long period of incredibly low interest rates facilitated accelerated transfer of wealth upwards to the wealthy. Amazingly all the time since 2008 governments kept spending tight when they could have borrowed at incredibly low rates & put it into building a strong economy. Various ideological positions are held as unbreakable (eg. The Fiscal Rules) that hold things back. /cont

@GeofCox@climatejustice.social Im all for looking at things from diverse perspectives, less so for making statements that sound like declaration of absolute truth. For certain monetary, tax and economic systems are complex. Clever people get paid lots of money to figure out clever/complex ways to work around 'issues' in the system - generally this is wealthy people/corporates attempting to avoid tax or regulation - which they often achieve. But you could include things like govs using Public Private Partnerships to take finance off balance sheet. This all adds more complexity. It gets increasingly difficult to get a reasonable understanding - and so its hard to counter stuff like repeated government giving a simplified explanation of countries finance being the same as an individuals/households finance to justify austerity. Which was amplified by mainstream media and widely accepted/became a common understanding. /continued

There have been over 190 internet shutdowns, in countries in Africa, between 2016 and 2024

These shutdowns – ordered mostly by governments and implemented by internet service providers – are often used to crack down on peaceful protests or political opposition. Researchers warn of the risk of internet shutdowns being used to reinforce authoritarian control.

@adversary communities and invited members, particularly those from marginalized groups to form a small working group to make an initial CoC for the co-op. Im pretty certain there was no intention for our CoC to be interphobic. Our CoC is a work in progress. I'd be happy to know what points you feel are problematic or whats missing and I'll propose some changes. 2/2

@tante I find I'm often now wary when the word sovereignty gets thrown around, precisely because its not unusual for it to be used in very nationalistic or individualistic contexts. It doesnt have to be. My familiarity with its usage (beyond in connection with royalty) came from #ViaCampasina coining of the concept of #FoodSovereignty where its also firmly tied to community https://nyeleni.org/en/declaration-of-nyeleni/ I often tell FoodSov folks I think about information technology in a similar way

My understanding is that theres the stuff that is backup up to signals servers & protected by the magic of Intel SGX & (by default) a short PIN (can elect to use a long password/phrase, but most people will go with the default) - SGX private keys can and have repeatedly been extracted from hardware. Think this backup is list of contacts and groups you have and maybe your profile details (name, image)?

Pretty sure the other backup of messages ,which I think can only be done manually and locally (actually I see they also have a beta e2ee storage service option for this now, Im not sure of details), is where your encryption keys are transfered. Which means your contacts dont get told your safety number has changed. Restoring this backup to a new device/client used to be painful and prone to failure for a number of reasons. Had to do incantations including granting Signal a lot of permissions you may not have otherwise wanted/needed for it to work. Thankfully much smoother now.

Theres good reasons support for running microG was never added

Security isnt great. Its questionable that it aids privacy. It downloads & uses proprietary Google libraries. All apps that interact with it run proprietary code which will connect directly to Google

microG support has to be maintained as AOSP changes. As GrapheneOS lives on the bleeding edge it would have to keep microG working with new android versions & QPR. Breakages could end up delaying OS security updates.
