@avuko@infosec.exchange the dent might not be that small, at least in the metropole. When the Great Depression started, we had pretty significant industrial capacity. Decades' worth of shipping that to "low cost regions" has left us with rusting hulks and few who even remember how to do industrial labor, the type that could possibly help us recover. Our position in world finance is incredibly precarious, based as it largely is on the petrodollar convention, which is also eroding.

@bittner@hachyderm.io @feoh@oldbytes.space You're on the right track. If, as a presenter, you're reading your slides or so much as tempting your audience to do so, you are not doing your job correctly. The audience should not have to read anything at all while you're presenting unless you have the skill to guide them into and then back out of that process. Given the utter contempt that too many techie presenters have for the existence of the craft of presentation, let alone its praxis, you may once in your whole life be present at a presentation where this actually works. More likely, you will not.

@iwein Did you read literally any part of the thread? Some people will choose low reliability, high latency, and low availability so they can attempt decentralization. Some people will also become hermits. It's about the same proportion of people.

@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org good to know!

After I wrote the above, I remembered that I went to college with a guy, Keith McMillan, who wrote a TeX "virus," which attacked Emacs back in 1994, so I'm guessing modern versions, having a MUCH larger attack surface, could be part of the picture.

@luke@mastodon.macneilmediagroup.com @arclight@oldbytes.space it's interesting that you should bring madness into the discussion. How do you know you're not subject to it just from interacting with the plagiarizing glazebox? How do you know the thing(s) to which you delegated the work--work you literally cannot understand or check the way you would have if you'd done it yourself--aren't doing things that would be madness if you did them?

@dalias@hachyderm.io There's a fun story about embedding Python https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/plpython.html . "meaning it does not offer any way of restricting what users can do in it" is load-bearing. That it's categorically impossible to prevent Python from doing fopen(), or any other thing, is just wild, and was understood decades back. It's a design feature.

@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org I was kinda hoping that their outreach to those actors, complete with the fact that they've designed products whose job it is to attract them, might constitute criminal conspiracy.

I don't know the details of what they've been up to, but I am confident you would not so much as hint at this if you weren't on very solid evidentiary ground.

@arclight@oldbytes.space for whatever reason, I am thinking about the legal elements of conspiracy. If I understand correctly, these are:
- Two or more people agreeing to do something illegal, while intending to help make it happen.
- One overt act by at least one of them in furtherance of same.

@arclight@oldbytes.space re: inconsequential and disposable vs. safety- and mission-critical systems, I'm pretty sure that's been shown to be a distinction the people who drive the production of software are incapable of seeing in advance. It's not merely that such people are wholly unaccountable, although that's a huge factor. It's because there is such a web of complexity in "modern" (past 35 years or so) software that it's now impossible to tell up front when hooking this piece to that one creates a kill web. That trivial hunk of Javascript that, say, left-pads text turns out to be wound into so many systems that it's not clear until far too late that it's brought down, say, a hospital IT system, or one that does traffic control in a city by its absence. That's just the bug side. Hostile actors have access to attack surfaces so huge and so varied that they are quite literally indefensible, and those surfaces are only growing. What to do about this? Well, I've been saying for decades that we're gonna learn the same lessons civil engineers did that led to PE stamps: high-body-count catastrophes. I'm now starting to wonder whether even that glum prediction covers the harms that are coming.

@feoh@oldbytes.space I have a way better idea. Put words (or anything else) on your slides exactly and only to complement your presentation.* They are not documents and should not be written or read as such. They're stage props. If your audience is reading your slides, you're Doing It Wrong. *You can put more words in your presenter notes, but the audience shouldn't even notice that those exist, so there should only be things like stage directions and speaking prompts.
