I'm currently reading Frank Herbert's "Dune" for the first time.

I was struck by this passage. It comes right after the Reverend Mother has tested Paul Atreides. She is talking with him.

"𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺."

How apropos seventy years later.

Mstdn.Social has 11,000 users. ELEVEN THOUSAND. That's a very important node in the Fediverse.

Imagine if each of those users gave @stux@mstdn.social one dollar. What would that amount to? I dunno. I'm American. I can't do math.

I was reminded today of the day I knew I had reached old man status.

On base. Walking towards the gym entrance. A female Marine and I were approaching from opposite directions, about equal distance.

Just as we're reaching the door, she jumps forward, grabs the door, opens it for me, and says, "After you, sir!"

Dear reader, I died that day.

If you do a Costco run on a bike/trailer, you get to have a $1.50 dog and a soda. Them's the rules.

We make our lasagna noodles thin enough to see through them. And our assembled lasagna has a lot of layers. A lot of layers.

You likely know this already. These 20 companies enrich their CEOs and pump up the stock with buy-backs, while lowering wages for employees, who are then reliant on SNAP and Medicare (IF they can get it) to survive.

I won't be giving them my business. Here's the report and the list of the 20 biggest offenders:

In case the official records-keeper is on Mastodon, our lunch guests got to the front door at 1:20. Here it is, 2:15 and they've finally walked away to the elevators.

My floor cleaner suddenly switched exclusively to yelling at me at 110% volume in FRENCH and I'm prevented from doing anything about it because AWS is down. 😒

It's my fault for buying an app-connected floor cleaner, I'll admit. I enshittified my own home. @pluralistic@mamot.fr warned me.

One of the things I admire about Japanese is how they’ll take something foreign and perfect it.

Shokupan is our favorite bread to make or eat. Well, maybe a really good sourdough for some things.

It was such a spring-like day, we decided to echo that with dinner tonight. Roast asparagus with a little lemon, we cut our pasts thin (cappelini-esque?) and topped it with peas and parsley, and did a crispy-skinned salmon.

PSA: Your computer is filthy.

Shut it down. Take a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and wipe it all down. Maybe do the touchscreen twice. Inspect it and wipe everything clean.

Now unplug your computer and put it in a closet. Walk outside. Be free forever.

Cooking dinner has been underway for more than an hour already. Slow food is good.

The wine is reducing, but that will go in shortly. Then it’s kick back for a while.

For dinner tonight we did a riff on linguine Amalfitano by adding asparagus and shrimp.

It’s wild that you can make enough pasta for two guys with just 100 grams of flour, an egg and a little water. Honestly, we could have had twice as much, as it’s pretty delicious, but this is the right portion size for us.

Shokupan in a Pullman loaf is one of my favorite breads to make. It takes all my self-control to wait until it’s cooled off before I start slicing.

My husband and I went to see Project Hail Mary this afternoon.

I loved the book. The movie was a great disappointment. To anyone who hasn't read the book it will be an even worse movie.

In short, whether you've read the book or not, my recommendation is to wait for it to come to cable.

We were both masked, of course, despite the theater policy of not allowing masks. And we had no trouble, except for the couple who decided they HAD to sit right next to us. 😒

Now that we're at the end of March, I can say I've bought nothing but groceries and medication for the entire month. That being done, I think I'll extend that. See how long I can go with spending only on the barest essentials.

It's also been a month without any filters or blocks on this site, but I may have to start filtering again. The amount of political tomfoolery about which I care not a whit can be a bit much.

There’s got to be an official name for this, but I’m blanking on it. Dinner was three corn tortillas (steamed) topped with beans, chicken cooked in enchilada sauce, cheese, guacamole, jalapeños, and red onion. We’re out of cilantro.

What’s this called? 🤔

The thing about the Apple Neo - back in the before-fore times, I was able to attach my Lumia to a keyboard and monitor and use it like a PC. Why don't today's phones do that? Dock your iPhone into a device and run it all with a full sized keyboard and a decent monitor.

But I'm just a frozen caveman, so...

One advantage of keeping my old California number - when I see a call/text from 619 or 858, I know it's spam.

I wish I could just block whole area codes on my phone.

Today I learned that the apocalypse refers to the revelation, or unhiding of the knowledge of the end of days, not the end of days itself. Although certainly, it's become a bit muddled. "Apocalyptic" would describe the catastrophe, rather than the discovery of the looming catastrophe, certainly.

Likely of interest to nobody but myself.

There are some very smart people with opinions on a statue. I'm into it.

'It has been called "decidely (sic) risqué"; "the most astounding peep show in art"; and "the grossest and most offensive example of Baroque art.'
